Bertioga , officially Portuguese Município da Estância Balneária de Bertioga , is a municipality on the coast of the Brazilian state of São Paulo . Bertioga represents the northeastern end of the metropolitan region of Baixada Santista around the port city of Santos , which is about 25 km southeast . The distance to the state capital São Paulo is about 65 km. As of July 1, 2019, the municipality had an estimated 63,249 inhabitants on an area of ​​around 492 km², which today corresponds to a population density of around 126 people per square kilometer (2010: 97 people).

Bertioga has the official status of a spa, an Estância balneária . The economy is determined by tourism. Numerous beaches attract visitors, especially from the metropolis of São Paulo.

Especially in the north of the municipality, the hinterland of the municipality is overgrown by dense rainforest, the Mata Atlântica .

history

Historically, Bertioga described the southern end of the Santo Amaro captaincy , one of the 15 historical hereditary captains that made up Brazil. According to his reports, the German adventurer Hans Staden was in command of the Portuguese fort Fortaleza de São Felipe at the beginning of the 16th century and was abducted to Ubatuba by the Tupinambá Indians . The Forte de São João da Bertioga from the 18th century is of historical interest .

The concentration camp doctor Josef Mengele , who murdered a large number of prisoners in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp , died here in 1979.
