Alison Brendom Alves dos Santos (born June 3, 2000 in São Joaquim da Barra , São Paulo ) is a Brazilian athlete who specializes in the 400-meter hurdles . In 2019 he became the South American champion in his favorite discipline.

Athletic career

Alison dos Santos comes from the state of São Paulo and has been competing in national competitions since 2016. In 2017 he qualified for the U18 World Championships in Nairobi , where he took on the 400 meter hurdles and with the 4 x 400 meter mixed relay. Over the hurdles, he finished fifth in a time of 53.98 s. With the relay he won the gold medal in front of the teams from Jamaica and South Africa.

In July 2018 dos Santos competed at the U20 World Championships in Tampere . In his favorite discipline, the 400 meter hurdles, he ran a new best time of 49.78 seconds in the final, with which he won the bronze medal. In September he started at the age of 18 at the U23 South American Championships in Cuenca, Ecuador. He won the 400 meter hurdles, over the 400 meters he improved to 45.97 s, with which he won the silver medal. Together with his teammates, he also won another silver medal with the 4 x 400 meter relay.

In May 2019 dos Santos started for the first time in an international adult championship at the South American Championships in Lima . In 49.88 s he won the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles with a new junior South American record. As in the U23 championships, he won silver with the relay. In June he won the U20 South American Championships in Cali in a personal best of 45.78 s in the 400-meter run. The time also meant a new event record in this discipline. In early July he entered the Universiade in Naples . There he won the 400 meter hurdles in 48.57 s. At the end of July, the U20 Pan American Championships followed in San José in Costa Rica, where dos Santos again won gold in the 400 meter hurdles. At the beginning of August he then took part in the Pan American Games , which, like the South American Championships, took place in Lima. In 48.45 s he also triumphed in the hurdles there.

At the end of August he took part in the highlight of the season, the World Championships , in Doha. He easily passed the preliminary and semi-finals and took seventh place in the final of the 400 meter hurdles in a new best time of 48.28 seconds. With his final run, he moved up to third place on the all-time junior world best list in the 400-meter hurdles. His overall performance in 2019 earned him a nomination for the Rising Star Honor at the World Athletics Awards , which ultimately went to Ethiopian Selemon Barega .

Dos Santos' scalp, chest and left arm have been severely scarred since a household accident at the age of ten months that left him with third-degree burns. He was hospitalized for four months because of the burns. The 2.00 m tall athlete, who initially practiced judo, began athletics in 2013 at the State Technical School in Pedro Badran , the hometown of his current coach. Because of his convincing performance, he received a place at the Edson Luciano Ribeiro Institute.
