Selemon Barega Shirtaga ( Amharic ሰለሞን ባረጋ ; * January 20, 2000 ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner .

Athletic career

Selemon Barega gained his first experience in international championships at the U20 World Championships 2016 in Bydgoszcz , where he won the gold medal in 13: 21.21 minutes. At the 2017 World Cross Country Championships in Kampala , he finished fifth in the U20 class in 23:03 minutes and secured the gold medal with the team. Then he won in 13: 51.43 min at the Junior African Championships in Tlemcen in the 5000-meter run and in 7: 47.16 min in the 3000-meter run at the Youth World Championships in Nairobi . He also qualified for the World Championships in London , where he finished fifth in the final with 13: 35.34 min . The following year he won the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 8: 15.59 minutes and only had to admit defeat to his compatriot Yomif Kejelcha . A big favorite for the U20 World Championships in Tampere , Finland , he had to be content with fourth place over 5000 meters after 13: 21.16 minutes. At the end of the season he improved the U20 world record of his compatriot Hagos Gebrhiwet to 12: 43.02 min at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels and is now fourth on the all-time best list (as of June 2019).

At the 2019 World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus , he finished fifth in the adult class in 32:16 minutes and secured the bronze medal with the team behind Uganda and Kenya. At the World Championships in Doha he won the silver medal in the 5000 meter final behind his compatriot Muktar Edris in 12: 59.70 minutes .

In 2019 Barega became the Ethiopian champion in the 10,000 meter run .
