The Estádio Olímpico do Pará (also Estádio Estadual Jornalista Edgar Augusto Proença ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Brazilian city of Belém in the state of Pará . It has space for 45,007 spectators and is used by the clubs Paysandu SC , Clube do Remo and SC Belém as the venue for some home games.
history
The Estádio Olímpico do Pará was commissioned in 1969 by the government of the state of Pará . The architect Alcyr Meira was asked to plan a stadium that could accommodate 120,000 spectators. However, these plans were discarded and the audience capacity was reduced to 70,000 seats. Construction of the stadium began in 1970, and eight years later in 1978 the new sports facility opened on March 4th of that year. For the first game in the Estádio Olímpico do Pará, a selection of the state of Pará and the junior national team of Uruguay met. The game ended 4-0 for Pará, the first goal in the new stadium was scored by Mesquita. Since then, the Estádio Olímpico do Pará has been used again and again by the local clubs to host home games, each of these clubs, the best known being Paysandu SC , which played for a long time in the Série A , the top division in Brazil , and Clube do Remo, owns its own stadium and plays most of its home games there. Only for games with a larger expected crowd is avoided in the large Belém stadium. Probably the most important game at the Estádio Olímpico do Pará was the final of the Copa dos Campeões, a Brazilian cup competition that took place from 2000 to 2002, in 2002. At that time, Paysandu SC defeated Belém Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte 3-0 on penalties.
The Estádio Olímpico do Pará, also known as Mangueirão or Estádio Estadual Jornalista Edgar Augusto Proença , now offers space for 45,007 spectators. This capacity was achieved as part of renovation work in 2002, during which the stadium was modernized and the capacity was reduced from 70,000 to the current 45,007 spectators. The record crowd in the stadium was achieved when the local derby between Clube do Remo and Paysandu SC took place on July 11, 1999 and 65,000 spectators came to the stadium. The attendance record after the renovation dates from May 15, 2003, when Paysandu played against the Boca Juniors from Argentina and 57,248 onlookers came to the overcrowded venue. For some time, the stadium was discussed as a venue for the 2014 World Cup , but the Brazilian Association then decided to build the new Arena da Amazônia in Manaus .
