Gustavo Gomes de Mendonça (born April 10, 1984 ) is a former Brazilian athlete who competed in discus and shot put .

Athletic career

International experience gained Gustavo Mendonça in 2000, when he in the Youth South American Championships in Bogota / nbsp with 17.20 m won the bronze medal with the 5-kg sphere and in the discus throw with 51.43 meters to the silver medal secured. The following year he took fifth place at the Youth World Championships in Debrecen with the 5 kg ball with 19.03 m. Then he won the Junior South American Championships in Santa Fe with 16.81 m in the shot put and won the bronze medal with the discus with 50.07 m. He then won the bronze medal at the Pan American Junior Championships there with 16.68 m and 49.53 m respectively. In 2002 he won the bronze medal in the discus throw at the Ibero-American Championships in Guatemala City with 52.20 m behind the Argentine Marcelo Pugliese and Paulo Bernardo from Portugal. He also reached fourth place in the shot put with 17.52 m. He then failed at the Junior World Championships in Kingston with 17.15 m and 55.39 m respectively in the qualification, but then won the Junior South American Championships in Belém with 17.71 m in the shot put and with 52.78 m in the discus competition. In 2003 he successfully defended his title at the Junior South American Championships in Guayaquil with 19.67 m and 62.29 m.

In 2004 he took part in the U23 South American Championships held for the first time in Barquisimeto and won there with 17.21 m in the shot put, while he won the silver medal in the discus throw with 52.75 m. The following year he finished sixth in the discus throw at the South American Championships in Cali with 49.95 m and was seventh at the Ibero-American Championships in Ponce with 16.91 m. He then won the bronze medal at the South American Championships in Tunja with 51.15 m behind the Argentinian Jorge Balliengo and his compatriot Ronald Julião . In the shot put he reached sixth place with 16.72 m. He then won the silver medal in the shot put behind the Portuguese Marco Fortes at the Lusophonie Games in Macau with 17.01 m . He also won at the U23 South American Championships in Buenos Aires , which also represented the South American Games, the bronze medal in the discus throw with 52.06 m and finished fourth with the ball with 16.72 m. In 2007 he took part for the first time in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and reached eleventh place in the shot put with 17.27 m. Before that, he was sixth at the South American Championships in São Paulo with 17.27 m.

In 2009 he won the bronze medal at the South American Championships in Lima with 17.55 m behind the Argentine Germán Lauro and his compatriot Julião. He then won the silver medal behind the Portuguese Fortes at the Lusophonie Games in Lisbon with 17.89 m. Two years later he reached 11th place in the discus throw at the Ibero-American Championships in San Fernando with 51.68 m and was 13th in the shot put with 17.04 m. 2016 he played his last competition in São Bernardo do Campo and then finished old of 31 years of his career as an athlete.

In 2006 and 2007 Mendonça was the Brazilian champion in the shot put and in 2004 in the discus throw.
