The Tönnjes EAST infrastructure Invest GmbH (proper spelling: Tönnjes EAST INFRASTRUCTURE INVEST GmbH) is a company in the field of secure vehicle identification. The company's headquarters are in Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony .

history

In 1832 the YH Tönnjes was founded by Hinrich Tönjes in Delmenhorst. The company started out as a cork tailor for bottle caps of all kinds and over time developed bottle caps made of plastic and aluminum, which were later manufactured industrially. In the early 1960s, the company used existing metalworking and plastic injection molding technologies to produce the first license plates.

From the beginning, the company focused on the export of machines and materials. Over the years, Tönnjes realigned itself. Today, in addition to the number plates and accessories, plastic injection molding as well as advertising signs and lettering belong to the business areas.

In 1990, JH Tönnjes EAST GmbH & Co KG was founded in order to establish production facilities for license plates abroad in addition to traditional export and to be able to act locally as a supplier and service provider for the registration authorities. The first branches were established in the former Eastern Bloc countries such as Hungary , Poland , Russia , Latvia and Lithuania .

In addition to JH Tönnjes EAST, Tönnjes EAST Infrastruktur Invest GmbH was also founded for strategic investments and acquisitions as well as for holding investments in Europe and overseas. In 2001, Tönnjes CARD International GmbH was founded to specifically deal with developing and emerging countries outside of Europe. With foundations in Latin America and acquisitions in Africa, Tönnjes CARD quickly developed into an important mainstay for Tönnjes. In 2011, the family businesses Tönnjes and Utsch merged the international business outside of Europe in the newly founded Holding Utsch Tönnjes International AG (UTI) and Tönnjes CARD became part of the UTI. With acquisitions in the United States of America and Australia, UTI became the world market leader for secure vehicle identification.

At the end of 2018, the new owners and the management board of Utsch AG decided to completely sell their stake in UTI to Tönnjes EAST Infrastruktur Invest GmbH. The competitor thus left the company. While Tönnjes has acted as a technology supplier in recent years, the company has thus become a system provider offering all areas of vehicle registration and identification from a single source, from license plate production to the creation of a central registration register.

Today the new group, headed by Tönnjes EAST Infrastruktur Invest GmbH, is represented at 50 locations abroad with local holdings and employs around 2,000 people worldwide.

Products and services

The company's business fields can be divided into software solutions, electronic vehicle identification, security solutions and production technology.

Software solutions

The approval software IDeTRUST organizes the official process of vehicle approval independent of platform. It can also be adapted to local requirements and integrated into existing IT systems. Not only vehicle registration, but also processes such as order entry, license plate production, printing of registration documents, warehousing and delivery can be controlled with IDeTRUST. At the same time, the transmission and comparison of registration data and networking with relevant interfaces such as the police or customs are possible. With the IDeTRUST Verification App, vehicles can also be authenticated via smartphone.

Electronic vehicle identification

Tönnjes EAST Infrastruktur Invest GmbH has developed a security system based on RFID technology for electronic vehicle identification with the partners NXP Semiconductors and Kathrein SE . The focus is on the IDePLATE RFID tag. It contains an integrated chip that stores the alphanumeric data record of the license plate in the form of an encrypted identification number. The windshield sticker IDeSTIX, also developed by Tönnjes, works according to the same principle, the so-called third license plate. The passive, batteryless RAIN RFID UHF chip can be read by authorized readers, either at rest or in flowing traffic. Data records are secured, decoded and verified using the specially developed IDeTRUST software.

A test run at the Oirschot military base in the Dutch province of North Brabant confirmed that vehicles with chip-based RFID technology can be reliably identified even in rain, snow or fog, and that a better rate is possible than with vehicle identification using camera systems.

In a performance test at the Sachsenring in March 2019, Tönnjes demonstrated to customers and officials from more than 30 nations that the RFID-based IDePLATE technology detects and authenticates vehicles at speeds of up to 220 km / h. To do this, several cars, trucks and motorcycles simulated various traffic scenarios and were recorded contactlessly by a reader and camera. The identification rate for the combination of camera, IDePLATE and IDeSTIX was around 99 percent.

Tönnjes EAST Infrastruktur Invest GmbH also advises authorities and companies worldwide on the introduction and implementation of analog or electronic systems for vehicle registration and identification.

Security solutions

To ensure a higher level of protection against forgery, Tönnjes develops laser codes, watermarks or ISO-certified high-security holograms that come from the banking sector and meet international security standards. Tönnjes also offers a safety license plate holder. This offers greater protection against theft of license plates because a special tool is required for dismantling. The various security elements can also be combined with one another.

Production technology

Tönnjes' production technology for license plates consists of tools, machines and production systems that are designed according to the modular system. In this way, the company can adapt the individual elements to the country-specific requirements. At the same time, digital linking of all work processes and permanent monitoring and documentation of production are possible. This means that every production step of a license plate can be traced back later thanks to an identification number. In 2018 Tönnjes supplied the Italian state printing company, Instituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, with the world's first fully automatic license plate production.
