The men's marathon at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held on September 6, 1987 in the streets of the Italian capital, Rome .

The Kenyan Douglas Wakiihuri became world champion . Silver went to Ahmed Salah from Djibouti . The reigning European champion Gelindo Bordin from Italy won the bronze medal.
