Michael Mockery

Michael Spöttel (born January 30, 1956 in Bad Nauheim ) is a former German long-distance runner .

Life

In 1978 Michael Spöttel won the Berlin Marathon . In 1979 he became German champion in the marathon and in the two following years runner-up over the same distance. In 1982 he became German champion in the 25 km road race , and the following year he won the same distance at the Paderborn Easter run and took bronze at the Universiade marathon in Edmonton .

In 1984 he achieved his personal record of 2:12:51 h in seventh place in the Houston Marathon and was third in the German marathon championship. In 1987 he won the Paderborn Easter run on the 10 km course, came third in the Hamburg Marathon and came 19th in the marathon of the World Athletics Championships in Rome . In 1988 he defended his title in Paderborn.

He was also successful on the track and in cross-country skiing . At the German championship in the 10,000 meter run , he was third in 1982 and second in 1983. From 1975 to 1986 he took part in a total of five cross-country championships , with a 47th place in 1975 as the best placement.

Michael Spöttel started for the LG Kreis Verden, the VfL Waldkraiburg and the LC Olympiapark Munich. He belonged to the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr and studied ethnology at the University of Cologne and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1994 he received his doctorate in this subject from the University of Hamburg .

Michael Spöttel lives with his partner and daughter in Achim . A son died in 1990 the day after his birth, shortly after the end of Spöttel's sporting career; another died of cancer in 2004 .
