The men's 3000 meter obstacle course at the World Athletics Championships in 1987 was held on September 3 and 5, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .

World champion was the Italian vice European champion from 1986 Francesco Panetta , who had already become vice world champion over 10,000 meters a week earlier . He won before the reigning European champion Hagen Melzer from the GDR . The Belgian William Van Dijck won the bronze medal.

Record improvement

World champion Francesco Panetta from Italy improved the existing world championship record in the final on September 5th by 6.49 seconds to 8: 08.57 minutes.
