Jane Frederick

Jane Frederick ( Jane Wardwell Frederick ; born April 7, 1952 in Oakland ) is a former American athlete who was internationally successful in pentathlon and heptathlon .

Frederick was arguably the best American all-rounder of her time. In total, she achieved 15 national records in the pentathlon and seven in the heptathlon. She was five times national champion in pentathlon (1972, 1973, 1975, 1976 and 1979) and four times in heptathlon (1981, 1983, 1985 and 1986). She also won two national championship titles in the 100-meter hurdles (1975 and 1976) and one in the 60-yard hurdles in the hall (1977).

After Frederick had to be content with the 21st place in the pentathlon at the 1972 Munich Olympics , the student from the University of Colorado at Boulder won the 1975 Summer Universiade in Rome. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, she finished seventh. It was to be their last participation in the Olympics, because in 1980 the United States boycotted the Games, and in 1984 Frederick could not start due to injury. In 1977 she came second at the Summer Universiade in Sofia .

In the 1980s, Frederick was successful several times in internationally important all-around meetings. She won three times at the Götzis all-around meeting (1981, 1982 and 1985) and twice at the Décastar in Talence (1984 and 1987). Most recently she won the bronze medal at the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987, behind her compatriot Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Larissa Nikitina from the Soviet Union.

Jane Frederick is 1.81 m tall and weighed 73 kg during her active days. After finishing her active sports career, she became a trainer at the University of Texas at Austin .
