The women's high jump at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 7th and 9th, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .
It was won by the Norwegian world champion from 1993 , Olympic third from 1996 and reigning European champion Trine Hattestad . Silver went to the Australian Joanna Stone . The German Tanja Damaske won the bronze medal.

qualification
29 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 62.50 m. Nine athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the three next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 60.90 m had to be achieved for the final.
