Neeraj Chopra (born December 24, 1997 in Khandra , Haryana ) is an Indian athlete who specializes in throwing a javelin .

Athletic career

Neeraj Chopra gained his first international experience at the 2013 World Youth Championships in Donetsk , where he was eliminated with 66.75 m in qualification. Two years later he qualified for the Asian Championships in Wuhan , where he finished ninth with 70.50 m. In 2016 he won the gold medal at the South Asian Games in Guwahati and silver at the Junior Asian Championships in Ho Chi Minh City behind the Japanese Junya Sado with 82.23 m . He then took part in the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz and won there with a new junior world record of 86.48 m ahead of the South African Johan Grobler and the Grenadine Anderson Peters . The previous record of the Latvian Zigismund Sirmais was 84.69 m.

In 2017 he won the gold medal at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar with a new championship record of 85.23 m and thus qualified for the World Championships in London , where he was eliminated with 82.26 m in the qualification . In 2018 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast for the first time and also won the gold medal there with 86.47 m ahead of the Australians Hamish Peacock and Anderson Peters. He celebrated his next title win at the Asian Games in Jakarta , where he improved his own national record to 88.06 m. He then finished sixth in the Athletics Continental Cup in Ostrava with 80.24 m.

In 2015 Chopra became the Indian champion in javelin throwing.
