Hiwot Ayalew (born March 6, 1990 in Woreda Sekela , Amhara ) is an Ethiopian long-distance and obstacle runner .

In 2011 she was eleventh at the World Cross Country Championships in Punta Umbría and won silver over 3000 m obstacle at the Pan-African Games in Maputo .

The following year she qualified over 3000 m obstacle for the Olympic Games in London , where she ran in fifth.

In 2013 she won silver in both the individual and team rankings at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz . Shortly thereafter, she finished second in the Crescent City Classic . At the World Athletics Championships in Moscow she was fourth over 3000 m obstacle.

Hiwot Ayalew is 1.72 m and weighs 50 kg. She is trained by Yohannes Mohammed and Bezuneh Yaye and starts for the team of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia . She has been married to the marathon runner Girma Tilahun since 2011. Her older sister Wude Ayalew is also a successful long-distance runner.
