Allen Woodring
Allen Woodring (born February 15, 1898 in Hellertown , Pennsylvania , † November 15, 1982 in Clearwater , Florida ) was an American athlete .
At the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 Woodring was Olympic champion over 200 meters. Woodring could not qualify as fifth in the US qualifying competitions for the Olympic Games. Shortly before leaving for Belgium, however, he was allowed to take part in the competitions instead of fourth-placed.
It is said of Allen Woodring that shortly after arriving in Antwerp, his running shoes fell apart and he was unable to get new shoes. Ultimately, he borrowed shoes from another runner for the duration of the Olympic race. In them he was able to prevail in the final run on August 20, 1920 against his competition and won the gold medal in 22.0 s ahead of the favorite and 100-meter Olympic champion Charles Paddock .
