Profound developmental disorder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The profound developmental disorders are a group of mental disorders classified according to DSM-IV and ICD-10 . They are characterized by impaired communication and social relationships, as well as a limited repertoire of activities. These disorders are congenital or acquired in early childhood and the first symptoms appear before the age of three. At no point does the development correspond to age. These disorders are differentiated from the circumscribed or specific developmental disorders .

All pervasive developmental disorders have some symptoms in common:

  • Difficulty using and understanding language
  • Difficulty relating to other people
  • Difficulty with changes in the environment and daily routine
  • repetitive body movements and other stereotypical behaviors

In DSM-5 (2013) and in ICD-11 (valid from 2022), the category for profound developmental disorders has been dissolved and replaced by the group of disorders of neural and mental development , which also includes autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

Classification

Earlier versions of the two internationally used classification systems for diseases categorized the profound developmental disorders as follows:

DSM

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (old version DSM-IV from 1994) names five profound developmental disorders :

ICD

In the 1992 International Classification of Diseases ( ICD-10 ), which is valid until 2022 , the profound developmental disorders are divided into eight categories:

  • F84.0: early childhood autism (Kanner autism, Kanner syndrome)
  • F84.1: atypical autism
  • F84.2: Rett syndrome
  • F84.3: other disintegrative disorder of childhood - (e.g. Heller's dementia )
  • F84.4: overactive disorder with impaired intelligence and movement stereotypes
  • F84.5: Asperger's syndrome (formerly known as autistic psychopathy )
  • F84.8: other pervasive developmental disorder
