Charles Jenkins ( Charles Lamont "Charlie" Jenkins Sr .; born January 7, 1934 in New York NY) is a former American sprinter and Olympic champion . His special route was the 400-meter run ,

In 1955 he won the national AAU championships over 440 yards , an indoor world record over 500 yards and the AAU indoor championships over 600 yards (the latter also in 1957 and 1958).

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , Jenkins won the gold medal over 400 meters, ahead of the German Karl-Friedrich Haas (silver) as well as the two third-place winners, the Finn Voitto Hellsten (bronze) and the Russian Ardalion Ignatiew (bronze). He got another gold medal together with the team in the 4 x 400 meter relay race , together with his teammates Lou Jones , Jesse Mashburn and Tom Courtney , ahead of the teams from Australia (silver) and from Great Britain (bronze).

Charles Jenkins is the father of Charles "Chip" Jenkins , who was also successful in the 400 meters.
