Andrew Valmon

Andrew Orlando Valmon (born January 1, 1965 in Toms River , New Jersey ) is an American sprinter who was successful in the 400-meter run in the late 1980s and early 1990s .

He first appeared in 1984 when he became the Pan-American Vice Youth Champion. He achieved his greatest successes in the 4 x 400 meter relay as a member of the US relay.

At the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo , Valmon, Watts, Danny Everett and Antonio Pettigrew only managed to win silver despite an excellent 2: 57.57 minutes: the British team was four hundredths of a second faster. Valmon also reached the final in the individual competition and placed fifth in 45.09 seconds.

A year later, the US team won gold at the Olympic Games in Barcelona with Valmon, Quincy Watts , Michael Johnson and Steve Lewis in 2: 55.74 minutes ahead of Cuba (2: 59.51 minutes) and the United Kingdom ( 2: 59.73 min).

The US team won another gold medal at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart in 2: 54.3 minutes ahead of Kenya (2: 59.8 minutes) and Germany (3: 00.0 minutes). The team ran in the same line-up as in 1992 except for Steve Lewis, who had been replaced by Harry Reynolds . Valmon was again starting runner.

As an individual runner, Valmon was successful at the IAAF Grand Prix Final in Barcelona in 1991 , where he finished second behind the Briton Roger Black in 45.39 s . In the overall standings he came in second with 48 points behind Roger Black with 51 points. At the Goodwill Games in Seattle in 1990 he was third in 45.46 s behind the Cuban Roberto Hernández and his compatriot Danny Everett .

At the American national championships he reached the finals four times, with a second place in 1991 as the best place.

After finishing his active career, Valmon became a coach. He currently works at the University of Maryland . As a member of the Athletes Advisory Committee of USA Track & Field , he founded the Avenue program, whose goal is to bring socially vulnerable youngsters with successful athletes in contact and give them as being exemplary. He has received several awards for his achievements as a trainer, including a. with the President's Award (2002).

Andrew Valmon has been married to the middle-distance runner Meredith Rainey-Valmon since 1996 .
