Roberto Hernández Prendes (born March 6, 1967 in Limonar in the province of Matanzas ) is a former Cuban sprinter , who was particularly successful in the 400-meter run and with the Cuban 4-by-400-meter relay .

In 1985 he won his first title at the Central America and Caribbean Championships over 400 m and was second at the Universiade in Kobe over the same distance . In 1986 he finished second at the Junior World Athletics Championships in Athens , as well as a year later at the World Indoor Championships in Indianapolis . At the Pan American Games in 1987 he was third in the 400-meter run.

At the World Athletics Championships in Rome in 1987 , he won the bronze medal with the 4 x 400 meter relay. He and Leandro Peñalver , Agustin Pavó and Lázaro Martínez and he set a new national record with a time of 2: 59.16 minutes. Hernández also started in the 400-meter run and finished fourth.

In 1989 he again won the Central America and Caribbean Championships over 400 m and also won the Universiade in Duisburg . At the Central America and Caribbean Games in Mexico City in 1990 , he won gold medals in the 200-meter run , the 400-meter run and the 4-by-400-meter relay. In 1991 he won the Pan American Games in Havana over 400 m and came fourth at the World Championships in Tokyo .

He celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona with the 4 x 400 meter relay. Together with Lázaro Martínez, Héctor Herrera and Norberto Téllez , he won the silver medal in 2: 59.51 minutes behind the United States relay , which set a new world record, and in front of the quartet from Great Britain . In the 400-meter run, Hernández was fifth in Barcelona.

In 1995 he won the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata over 400 m. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , he finished fourth over the same distance. With the season, however, he missed the finals this time.

In 1998 he managed to defend his title at the Central America and Caribbean Games in Maracaibo with the 4 x 400 season . In 1999 he was second at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg and fourth in the 400-meter run at the World Championships in Seville .

After finishing his active sports career, he worked for the Cuban State Athletics Association and was also sent to Venezuela on a foreign assignment.

Roberto Hernández is 1.79 m tall and weighed 74 kg when he was active.
