After trying various other sports, she got into athletics when she was twelve. Before she found the 400 meter hurdles, she was successful in the all- around competition at the state level. In the early days of the all-around competition, Baumann first indicated a talent in the high jump . At the age of 15 she reached 1.72 m, but did not grow tall enough and went looking for a new discipline that ended with the decision for the long hurdles.
In 2013 Baumann came in 3rd place over 400 meter hurdles at the German Youth Championships (U20) .
In 2014, she led the U20 best list with 58.42 seconds and was second fastest among the U23 runners. In the following year she was fastest of the U23 with 56.62 seconds.
In 2015 she became German champion in the 400 meter hurdles.
In 2016 Baumann achieved the Olympic norm at the International Flanders Athletics Meeting (IFAM) in Oordegem (Belgium) on May 28 with 56.19 seconds. A little later she became German champion in the 400 meter hurdles and secured herself participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro because of the previously achieved norm .
In 2017, Baumann became the European team champion in Lille, northern France , and took 7th place in the 400-meter hurdles . At the end of the year Baumann led the German annual best list with 55.72 seconds over this distance.
In 2018, Baumann had to forego the open-air season and especially the preparations for the European Championships in Berlin due to an injury . After she had cured the Achilles tendon injury, she was diagnosed with a broken fibula.
In 2019 she was able to become German runner- up.
In 2020 Baumann started the indoor season at the end of January with personal bests over 200 and 400 meters . In mid-July, she increased her best in the 400 meter hurdles to 55.53 seconds, which made her top the German annual best list over the long hurdles and was the title favorite at the German Championships in Braunschweig .
At the beginning of August 2020 Baumann surprisingly announced her immediate end of career, because the mental stress before and after competitions, which also had significant health consequences, did not evaporate despite professional help and she found it difficult to feel comfortable in competitive sports.
