Dathan Ritzenhein (born December 30, 1982 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ) is an American former long-distance runner .

Dathan Ritzenhein is 1.70 m tall and has a competition weight of 55 kg. He is married to the long-distance runner Kalin Toedebusch, with whom he has a daughter.

Career

He celebrated his first international success with third place in the junior race at the 2001 World Cross Country Championships in Ostend.

In 2004 he took part in the Olympic Games in Athens in the 10,000 meter run , but had to give up the race due to injury. In 2005 he won the US cross-country championships, among other things .

In 2006 he made his debut in the New York City Marathon on the marathon distance . He finished eleventh in a time of 2:14:01 h. In 2007 he won the Healthy Kidney 10K .

At the World Athletics Championships in 2007 in Osaka, he finished ninth in the 10,000-meter run. On November 3, 2007, he secured himself a starting place in Beijing in the US elimination race for the 2008 Summer Olympics in a time of 2:11:07 h as second behind Ryan Hall . There he finished ninth as the fastest American in a time of 2:11:59 h.

In 2009 he achieved second place behind Mebrahtom Keflezighi in the US half marathon championships in a personal best of 1:01:35 h . In the London Marathon , he also set a personal best with 2:10:00 h and finished eleventh. At the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, he finished sixth over 10,000 m in another personal best of 27: 22.28 min. A little later he set a new continental record in the 5000 meter run at the world class athletics meeting in Zurich with a time of 12: 56.27 minutes . He experienced another highlight of the season at the World Half Marathon Championships in Birmingham , where he won the bronze medal in exactly 60 minutes and undercut his previous best performance over this distance by over a minute and a half.

After undergoing an operation on the Achilles tendon in 2011 , he could not qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games for the marathon, but for the 10,000-meter run. There he was 13th in 27: 45.89 min. At the Chicago Marathon 2012, he improved his personal best to 2:07:47 h and was the best non-African runner in ninth place.

At the beginning of May 2020, Ritzenhein announced the end of his sporting career.
