Roman Flügel (born May 5, 1970 in Darmstadt ) is a German producer, DJ and live act in the electronic music scene. Since the 1990s, Roman Flügel has appeared as a producer under various pseudonyms such as Eight Miles High , Roman IV , Ro 70 and Soylent Green . Together with Jörn Elling Wuttke he has published music under the aliases Alter Ego , Acid Jesus , Holy Garage and Sensorama . He has also worked with well-known artists such as Ricardo Villalobos and made a name for himself in the electronic music scene through cross-genre music productions. Since 2009 he has mostly appeared under his maiden name.

Life

Born in Darmstadt, he learned to play the piano at the age of six and to play the drums at the age of 12. As a drummer he was a member of several bands, which however seemed less interesting to him from time to time when he came into contact with electronic music. In the mid-1980s he became interested in electronic body music in his early teens and came into contact with acid house and early techno for the first time in 1987 through the House Trax 1 compilation of the DM Street Sounds series, which he got from his older brother . This compilation features artists like Phuture or Derrick May alias Rhythm is Rhythm , who are considered pioneers of these musical styles and who also inspired Roman Flügel. In the early 1980s he was interested in dance music, such as B. for Funky Town by Lipps Inc.

In addition to the Chicago House Trax compilation, his visits to the legendary former Frankfurt techno club Omen should prove to be formative for his musical career. After acquiring the necessary studio equipment, Flügel passed a demo tape to Jörn Elling Wuttke from Darmstadt in the early 1990s, whereupon their collaboration was decided. The Frankfurt DJs and co-owners of the record store Delirium Atanasios Christos Macias and Heiko Schäfer , to whom Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke had previously presented their music , then became aware of the duo . In order to offer the latter an individual framework for their publications, the sublabels Klang Elektronik and Playhouse were founded in 1993 . The latter was founded specifically to publish the music of Flügel and Wuttke under Holy Garage . Both sub-labels belong to the mother label Ongaku Musik, which was founded in 1992 . In order to fully devote himself to electronic music, Flügel gave up studying musicology and, as co-owner of the Ongaku sublabels, was a co-designer for many years, but is no longer an active part.

In addition to his work as a music producer, Flügel has been active as a DJ worldwide since the beginning of his career. He has a residency at the Robert Johnson House Club , which was opened by Macias in Offenbach-Kaiserlei in 1999 . Since the Berghain opened , he has also played on the upper floor in the Panorama Bar.

Music style and publications

Roman Flugel's productions operate in a broad cross-genre area of electronic music. Acid, downtempo , intelligent dance music , ambient , house , tech house , techno and electro house are just a few styles that can be ascribed to him. In a radio interview with the American label owner and DJ Tim Sweeney (Beats in Space) in September 2012, Roman Flügel described his musical collaboration with Jörn Elling Wuttke alias Alter Ego as one of the founding members of Electro House. Alter Ego had a hit in 2004 with the title Rocker , which made it into the German and British charts. Alter Ego tracks were remixed by artists such as Mouse on Mars , Two Lone Swordsmen , Plaid and Herbert . As a solo artist, Roman Flügel was able to perform with the track Geht's Noch? , which appeared on Cocoon Recordings in 2004 and is one of his most famous productions, is gaining fame beyond the electronic music scene. According to his own statement, his different aliases stand for different styles of music. Soylent Green and Roman IV , for example, tend to stand for house music and Eight Miles High for experimental music. The latter pseudonym described Flügel as his "favorite name, behind which I can hide", although he tried to get rid of this attitude at the latest with productions under his birth name.

In his musical career, Flügel has released five albums as a solo artist so far (as of September 2014). The first solo album Ro 70 was released by Flügel under the alias of the same name Ro 70 in 1995 on Source Records. His second solo album catalog was released under Eight Miles High in 2002 on Klang Elektronik. Under Soylent Green , the third solo album was released in 2006 on the label Playhouse La Forza del Destino , which was rated 4.5 out of 5 possible points on the online platform for electronic music Resident Advisor. In this album, Flügel used classic drum machines like the Roland TR-808 and the Roland TB-303 , both of which are of great importance for house, techno and acid music. For a long time, Playhouse was one of the most important and well-known German labels for techno and house, on which other artists such as Ricardo Villalobos and Isolée published alongside wings . The house EP Altes Testament appeared on the label under the alias Roman IV in 1995 , which is the first production by Flugel as a solo artist. With the EP New Testament , Roman Flügel last released music on Playhouse in 2008 (as of July 2013). From 2009 releases followed a. a. on Turbo Records, Running Back, Dial and especially Live at Robert Johnson. In 2011 Dial released his fourth solo album, Fatty Folders , under his birth name , for which he recorded percussions, solos and some dub effects himself in the studio. Like the debut album under Soylent Green , Fatty Folders received 4.5 out of a possible 5 points on the Resident Advisor platform. For the Frankfurt label Live at Robert Johnson, which was founded in 2009 and belongs to the club of the same name, he has so far contributed three EPs and a mix CD (as of July 2013).

Roman Flügel also acts as a remixer for various artists. Together with Jörn Elling Wuttke, he has already made remixes for The Human League , Primal Scream , Pet Shop Boys and Kylie Minogue . As a solo artist he produced under his real name a. a. Remixes for collective Turmstrasse or Radio Slave . He also helped with Sven Väth's productions (e.g. with the album Contact ).
