Ivan Monighetti ( Russian Иван Андреевич Монигетти ; born August 3, 1948 in Riga ) is a Russian cellist and conductor .

Life

Monighetti was one of the last students of Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory . In 1974 he won the second prize in the violoncello category at the Tchaikovsky Competition , which marked the beginning of his successful international career. He has performed with musicians such as Martha Argerich , Mikhail Pletnev , Alexei Lyubimov , Vasily Lobanov , Vadim Zakharov , Andrei Gavrilov , Pyotr Meshchaninov , Liana Issakadse and Anner Bylsma , the Berlin Philharmonic under Krzysztof Penderecki , the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Kurt Masur , the Gulbenkian Orchestra under Tang Muhai and the Moscow Philharmonic under the direction of his teacher Rostropovich.

Monighetti is a dedicated representative of contemporary music. His repertoire includes works by Krzysztof Penderecki , Iannis Xenakis , Henri Dutilleux , Alexander Knaifel , Alfred Schnittke , Tan Dun , Sofia Gubaidulina , Walentyn Sylwestrow , Franghiz Ali-Zadeh and other composers of the 20th century. Alexander Knaifel, Boris Tischtschenko and Krzysztof Meyer dedicated several works to him, Edisson Denissow his Haydn Variations (1982), Sylwestrow a cello sonata (1983) and Franghiz Ali-Zadeh a cello concerto (2002).

In addition, Monighetti's attention is paid to the music of the 18th and 19th centuries. He played works by Johann Sebastian Bach , Luigi Boccherini and Joseph Haydn and was awarded a Fryderyk in 2003 for his recording of Bach's six solo suites . His musical partners in this field include Anner Bylsma , Nancy Argenta , Simon Standage , Ronald Brautigam , Wieland Kuijken and Alexei Lyubimow . In Moscow he was the founding director of an early music festival . He made his conductor's debut in 1998 with a performance of Haydn's Nelson Mass .

In total, Monighetti recorded more than 40 records for labels such as ECM , Erato , Harmonia Mundi , Le Chant du Monde , Orfeo International and Berlin Classics . He lives in Switzerland, where he is professor for cello at the Music Academy of the City of Basel ; as a visiting professor he taught at the Moscow Conservatory and the Madrid Academy of Music .
