Erato (engraving by Virgil Solis from P. Ovidii Metamorphosis from 1562).

Erato ( Greek Ἐρατώ Eratṓ , German 'the loving, the lovely' ; emphasis on the first or second syllable, in Greek on the last syllable) is one of the nine muses in Greek mythology . She is the muse of love poetry , lyric poetry , song and dance . Erato is a daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne .

The nymph Erato from the group of Nereids is said to have been the prophet of Pan in older times , who had a shrine in Lykosura in Arcadia , where his oracle was brought in . Erato was the wife of Arkas . With Arkas she had three sons: Azan , Apheidas and Elatos .

Another Erato is one of the Thespiads , the fifty daughters of Thespios , with whom Heracles fathered sons; it can also be mistaken for her son, who is then called Eratus.
