Thespios
Thespios ( Greek Θέσπιος Théspios , Latin Thespius ) is a figure in Greek mythology . He was the son of the Athenian king Erechtheus and Praxithea ; his siblings were Kekrops , Orneus , Metion , Sikyon , Pandoros , Alkon , Eupalamos , Prokris , Krëusa , Oreithyia , Chthonia , Protogeneia , Pandora and Merope .
He became king of Thespiai, neighboring Thebes, in Boeotia (not to be confused with Thespis from Ikaria ).
From Thespios' marriage to Megamede , the daughter of Arneus, 50 daughters, the Thespiads ( Θεσπιάδες ), emerged. According to other sources, Thespios had these daughters from several wives. He wanted the Thespiads to have children from the hero Heracles . On Thespios's order, he killed a lion that was beating cattle on Mount Kithairon . The devious king promised him a night with each of his 50 daughters, each of whom gave birth to a son. According to another tradition, the hero slept with them one night; however, a daughter, who later became a virgin priestess in a temple of Heracles, refused, while another gave birth to twins. 40 sons went to Sardinia under the leadership of Iolaos , where they settled the Joleum region.
