Elatos (son of Arkas)
Elatos ( Greek Ἔλατος Élatos ) is an Arcadian hero in Greek mythology . He was the son of Arkas , after whom the Arcadians are said to be named.
As the mother of Elatos, different names are given in some versions of the legend. According to the library of Apollodorus , Elatos' mother was called either Leaneira , daughter of Amyklas , or Meganeira , daughter of Krokon , or Chrysopeleia , who was a nymph . The latter variant was handed down to Eumelus of Corinth . Pausanias , however, says that Elatos was the son of Arkas from the dryad Erato . The library of Apollodorus names only Apheidas as brothers of Elatos ; Pausanias adds Azan as a second brother. Of Laodice , the daughter of Kinyras , Elatos had, according to the Bibliotheke of Apollodor two sons, Stymphalos and Pereus ; Pausanias names Aipytos , Kyllen and Ischys as further sons .
When the kingdom of Arkas was divided among his sons, Elatos is said to have received the area around the Arcadian mountains of Kyllene . He later emigrated, helped the Phocians defend the Temple of Apollo at Delphi against the robberies of the Phlegyans and founded the city of Elateia . Pausanias reports that he saw a statue of Elatos in the Agora of Elateia, but did not know whether it honored him as the city's founder or whether it was his grave stele. There was also a statue of Elatos in the Arcadian city of Tegea .
