Foals ( . Engl . Pl for foals ) is an indie - and math-rock - band from Oxford , England . Her music style is primarily shaped by math rock, but is also considered to be influenced by techno and minimal .
The first album Antidotes was released in March 2008. It was produced by Wendy Jane and Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio , although the band members mixed the album themselves. The band currently has a contract with Transgressive Records in Europe and Sub Pop in the USA .
history
The Foals were founded by Andrew Mears , the singer in the band Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies (now Youthmovies ). He was still involved in the debut single Try This on Your Piano / Look at My Furrows of Worry , but left the band after a few months to concentrate on the Youthmovies album Good Nature . The guitarist and keyboardist of the band Jimmy Smith first played together with Walter Gervers in the band Face Meets Grill, which broke up shortly before the founding of the Foals. After Edwin Congreave (keyboard, saxophone) and Yannis Philippakis (vocals, guitar) joined them, the line-up was complete. Bevan and Philippakis have been friends since childhood and played in the math rock band The Edmund Fitzgerald before joining the Foals . The band's first published songs were Mathletics , Hummer and Astronauts and All , but initially did not succeed.
The Foals' first album, Antidotes , was released on March 24th, 2008. In the same year a limited edition was released that featured songs like XXXXX , which were used as intros at concerts. The respective singles also included B-sides like Brazil Is Here , Unthink This , A Sketch for ESG and others. Later, when the single Red Socks Pugie was released , a nine-minute version of Glaciers appeared , which had previously only existed for two minutes .

That same year, Yannis Phillipakis was involved in a fight at the 2008 Summercase Festival. The reason given was that the lead singer of the Sex Pistols against the Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke racist remarks have made, after which Phillipakis and the Kaiser Chiefs are said to have tried to settle the dispute arising, and were injured. However, the Foals were able to perform again and dedicated the song Cassius to the front man of the Sex Pistols.
In 2009 Foals played as the opening act for Bloc Party in London and at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival. The song Olympic Airways was then the soundtrack of the computer game FIFA 09 , in the game Pro Evolution Soccer 11 the song Miami was represented. In 2015, the Foals were featured in two video games: FIFA 16 featured the song Mountain At My Gates from the album What Went Down , and the game Life Is Strange featured the title Spanish Sahara .
After the album Antidotes , songs like Spanish Sahara , Alabaster , Total Life Forever and O-Funk appeared . In August they started new recordings in the Svenska Gramofon studio in Gothenburg , Sweden . On May 7, 2010, the album Total Life Forever was finally released . In December 2011 they played as the opening act for Red Hot Chili Peppers .
On February 8, 2013, the third studio album Holy Fire was released. On August 28, 2015, the fourth studio album What Went Down was released .
On January 5, 2018, the band announced that bassist Walter Gervers would leave the band. At the same time it was announced that the fifth studio album was being worked on. On January 14, 2019, Foals announced via Twitter that two new albums should be released in 2019. Part one of the double album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost was released in March and took them to number 2 for the second time, part two was released in October and was the first of their albums to reach number 1 .
At the Brit Awards 2020 , the Foals were recognized as the best British band.
