Sway (born September 5, 1982 in London ; real name Derek Andrew Safo ), also Sway DaSafo , is a British rapper of Ghanaian descent.

Career

Sway grew up in north London and began creating beats for other rappers at the age of 15 and recording his own mixtapes at home. In 2005 his self-released recordings This Is My Promo Vol. 1 and Vol.2 found their way to pirate channels and finally to the BBC channel 1Xtra. Without a record deal and a real release, he surprisingly received the award for best hip-hop performer at the MOBO Awards 2005.

Despite the following offers from record companies, the rapper decided to independently release his first real album, This Is My Demo . With Little Derek it contained a top 40 hit, but was otherwise rather cautiously successful.

He then signed with the US musician Akon's Konvict label . His signature LP was released there in 2008 , although it was hardly more successful than its predecessor. Three singles landed in the UK Top 75.
