Laura Mvula (born Douglas; born April 23, 1987 in Birmingham ) is an English soul pop singer with Caribbean roots.

biography

Laura Mvula comes from a very musical family with many relatives active in music. She learned the piano at the age of eight and the violin at the age of ten, and later took a four-year course in composition at the Birmingham Conservatoire . She also has a classical vocal training. She married Themba Mvula, a fellow student from Zambia who works as a baritone in classical music. For four years she sang with the Black Voices , a traditional a cappella group under the direction of her aunt, who has a Caribbean background and performs soul and gospel music.

After graduating, she worked as a substitute music teacher at a secondary school and began writing pop songs on the side. This was followed by a job at the reception of the symphony orchestra in her hometown, but this did not bring her closer to the practice of music. To get her music career off the ground, she sent her music by email and found a contact who brought her together with a label. In 2012 she was signed by RCA and played at the iTunes Festival that same year. This resulted in her first publication from concert recordings. A separate EP called She was released in November. The title track in particular made so much impression that it was ranked 4th on the BBC's Sound of 2013 list at the turn of the year and was nominated for the Critics' Choice Award at the 2013 BRIT Awards , both predictions for a successful future.

She finished her debut album for spring 2013. The song Green Garden , which reached number 31 in the UK charts , was released in advance at the end of February . The LP Sing to the Moon was released on March 4th.

She also took part in the 2013 song Sad Sad World on the album Momentum by artist Jamie Cullum ; In 2018 she was involved with Buika on Carlos Santana's song Blue Skies on his album Africa Speaks .
