The Drums is an American music band from Brooklyn , New York . Some of the members come from the previous band Elkland . The band is under contract with the Minor Records label.

Band history

The band members Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham got to know each other as students in a holiday camp. As teenagers they formed the electro-pop duo Goat Explosion , which however did not last and broke up in 2003. While Graham performed with the indie pop group Horse Shoes , Pierce founded the group Elkland with Adam Kessler. This was under contract with Columbia Records and appeared in 2005 with the album Golden .

In 2008 Pierce and Graham met again and decided to make music together again. After moving to New York City, they were joined by Kessler and, a short time later, Connor Hanwick. In the fall of 2009 they released the EP Summertime . A short time later, the BBC named the group as one of the most promising performers of 2010 in its list of nominations for the BBC Sound of 2010.

In September 2010 Adam Kessler left the band, but it is continued by the other three members. The second studio album Portamento was released in autumn 2011 . In 2012 there was a rift between the remaining founding members. Drummer Connor Hanwick left the band. Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham released their third album Encyclopedia in September 2014 without the other two . Pierce says in an interview with motor.de that when people leave, it doesn't mean that they are becoming incomplete.

style

Critics characterize the style of The Drums as a mixture of 50s surf pop and the sound of Manchester - the Factory Records bands and The Smiths . Singer Pierce borrows vocally from Marc Almond, and his performance is also said to be similar to Ian Curtis , the singer of Joy Division . The melodies of the songs refer to Soft Cell and the Beach Boys .
