Friends (originally Perpetual Crush ) is an American indie - pop band from Brooklyn ( New York City ), which was founded in the year of 2010.

In addition to singer Samantha Urbani, the band also includes Lesley Hann ( drums , bass , backing vocals ), Nikki Shapiro ( guitar , keyboard , percussion ), Matthew "Matt" Molnar (keyboard, bass, percussion) and Oliver Duncan (drums).

history

The band had its origins when Urbani wrote songs on her laptop while studying instead of following the lessons. She then recorded this with her mobile phone and "produced" the first song Friend Crush . After an e-mail to her friend Matthew Molnar, who later became the band’s keyboardist, she brought him on board and, after a conversation at a party, also got her school friend Nikki Shapiro to join the new band. Molnar and Shapiro were already familiar, as both had previously worked at the vegan restaurant Angelica Kittchen in Manhattan .

During a cimicidae -Plage had in September 2010 Lesley Hann, a friend Urbanis childhood, his home along with his roommate Oliver Duncan left and finally came to Urbani, to live around there temporarily. The two joined the band and the band then rehearsed for a week in Molnar's apartment before playing a first concert .

On March 21, 2011, the band released Friend Crush as their first single, followed by I'm His Girl and My Boo on October 31 of the same year . After the singles were released, the band went on a European tour in early 2012. So she played concerts in Berlin and Hamburg , among others , before her first album Manifest! was released on the label Fat Possum Records as LP and download version, followed a day later by Lucky Number Music .

The album was highly praised by critics in the run-up to its release and triggered a certain hype around the band. However, the album could not meet the high expectations: In the first week it only reached number 100 in the UK album charts, in Germany it did not enter the charts.

reception

The band is seen by many critics as the epitome of the hipster movement. So writes Rolling Stone Magazine in the February 2012 issue about the band, that one might almost be understood as a parody of these same hipsters this. The band is characterized by extremely uncombed hair, neon glasses and skinny pants straight away .

This style is also perceived by other critics and music magazines. For example, the Musikexpress describes the band on May 21, 2012 as a “convinced second-hand carrier”.

Musically, the band was on numerous lists of music that should cause a sensation in 2012. Among other things, it was named on the " BBC Sound Of 2012 " list and in the February issue of Rolling Stone the band was one of the most promising newcomers of the season alongside Azealia Banks , Alabama Shakes and nine other bands.
