Azealia Amanda Banks (born May 31, 1991 in Harlem , New York ) is an American rapper and singer .
Career
Career start
Azealia Banks was a student at New York's LaGuardia High School for Music and Performing Arts and tried her hand at actress and musical performer before turning to hip-hop music. She appeared as Miss Bank $ and made her first recordings with the music project Major Lazer, among others . After separating from XL Records , in which no solo release came about, she went to England to work with producer Paul Epworth on a debut album and from there called herself Azealia Banks and not Miss Bank $ as before .
2011–2012: 1991 and Fantasea
In September 2011 she drew attention to herself for the first time with the song 212 , which is based on a sample by Lazy Jay . In December 2011 she released the song Liquorice after she was previously named the coolest person 2011 by the NME . In 2012 she released the EP in 1991, which includes titles 212 and Liquorice and two new tracks.
On July 11th 2012, Banks released her first mixtape Fantasea , which was to be called Fantastic . She previously released the songs Jumanji , Aquababe and Nathan on the Internet.
Her most successful single to date is 212 . At the beginning of 2012, Banks ranked 3rd in the BBC's forecast for the Sound of 2012. Immediately afterwards, 212 entered the UK charts at number 75 due to download demand. This was followed by a real re-release, three months after the first entry, the single reached number 12 in England and also made it into the top 20 in Belgium and the Netherlands.
2013–2016: Broke with Expensive Taste and Slay-Z
In 2013 she released the single Yung Rapunxel , which is the lead single from her first studio album Broke with Expensive Taste . The promotional song ATM Jam followed , which she sang with producer Pharrell Williams. She released the second single from the album Heavy Metal and Reflective on her own label Azealia Banks Records . In 2014, a few days before the album was released, the album's third single, Chasing Time, was released .
Her long previously announced first album Broke with Expensive Taste was finally released in November 2014. In May 2015, the last single from the album followed, namely Ice Princess .
In February 2015 it was announced that Banks will make her acting debut in the film Coco by RZA and will play the leading role there. The film is scheduled to be released in 2017.
On March 24th she released her second mixtape Slay-Z . She previously released the singles The Big Big Beat and Used To Being Alone . The video for The Big Big Beat was released on April 26, 2016 and shows them in a few scenes in New York. In May, she got into a Twitter argument with Zayn Malik , whom she accused of plagiarizing her ideas while creating a video. After she insulted him about his Pakistani ancestry and alleged same-sex orientation, her Twitter account was blocked and a festival organizer removed her appearance from the program. In June 2016, she apologized for her behavior and vowed to get well soon in an open letter.
In August 2016 the song Blossom was published on the Internet, which was actually intended for their debut album. In the same month she released another song, Wut U Do , for her third mixtape Fantasea II . She is currently working on this and her second studio album, Business & Pleasure .
2017–2019: Fantasea II: The Second Wave and Icy Colors Change
In spring 2017 she released the song Crown on Soundcloud, which she recorded with Lunice. The single Chi Chi was released on June 5, 2017. On June 26, the song Escapades , which she had announced on her CheapyXO website, was released as a promotional single. On September 1st, the song was released as a single for sale and stream.
Their mixtape Slay-Z was also made available for sale and for streaming on July 12, 2017. Before that she founded her own label Chaos & Glory Recordings. She embarked on a tour on October 4, 2017, touring and giving concerts in the United States and Canada.
The film Love Beats Rhymes , in which Banks plays Coco, was released on December 1st. The director was the rapper RZA . For Banks this is the first role in a film. On March 9, 2018, she released the song Movin 'on Up , to which she dedicated the film.
On April 6, 2018, Anna Wintour released the first single from her second studio album Fantasea II: The Second Wave , which she has been recording since 2013 and should be released in 2018. On July 5, 2018, the second single Treasure Island was released . The release of the album was postponed for an uncertain time by Banks after her appearance on Wildn 'out . On August 22, 2018, the song Pyrex Princess was released .
In November 2018, Banks announced via Instagram that the EP Icy Colors Change would be released on December 20, 2018 . It contains some Christmas songs, including the song of the same name, Icy Colors Change , which she released as a demo a year earlier.
