Yung Rapunxel is a song by the American rapper Azealia Banks . It was first released on April 16, 2013 on all major download portals as the first single from their debut album Broke with Expensive Taste (2014).

background

The first ideas for Yung Rapunxel came up in late 2011. Banks contacted producer Lil Internet via SoundCloud after hearing some of the songs he had composed on his site. The two musicians met in New York, where they recorded the first demos for the song in individual recording studios and hotel rooms. Azealia Banks, Kevin James, Premro Smith and Chandron Moore were involved in the songwriting. However, the concept of the song was revised again and again as soon as Banks and Lil Internet met again.

When asked if the song had changed significantly during the creation process, Lil Internet replied:

"In terms of the beat, it isn't really. […] The real intention was for it to be something chaotic, something kinda to […] make room for a new start, […] that really embodies the pinnacle of all the chaos and angst and anger […] and just how difficult it is to really exist in this world right now. I think Yung Rapunxel is really about that and about that side of her personality [...] The songs is supposed to be about the embodiment of chaos and that was always what it was about in the beginning. "

“As for the beat, it doesn't. We really wanted to create something chaotic, something that makes room for something new, that embodies the height of chaos, fear and anger and how difficult it is to hold your own in this world today. Yung Rapunxel is about this and about this side of her [Banks] personality. The song is supposed to be an embodiment of chaos, and that's what it was all about from the start. "

Banks first announced Yung Rapunxel on January 28, 2013 as the first single from their debut album Broke With Expensive Taste . In March 2013, Banks posted the song on their Soundcloud page and revealed the song's artwork. This shows a black and white portrait of the rapper who has opened her mouth wide. In addition, her eyes are replaced with copies of her mouth. Banks wears a chain with her last name on it. The title of the song (stylized as #YUNGRAPUNXEL) can be seen in the lower edge of the picture. The song's release has been postponed several times, but will take place worldwide in April 2013.

Criticism

Critics were divided about Yung Rapunxel . MTV Buzzworthy called the song a solid hip-house banger ("a bona fide hip-house banger"). Ray Rahman ( Entertainment Weekly ) called the song "top notch" ("a doozy"). Marc Hogan from Spin Magazine described the song as a "house-rap hybrid" and compared Banks vocal style with "the fury of Kelis ' Caught Out There ." (Translated: the wrath of Kelis ' Caught Out There .)

Robert Copsey, who reviewed the song for Digitalspy , gave it two stars out of five and wrote:

"" 'So tired of all this drama,' she [sings], before giving her haters a severe tongue-lashing on the shouty and head-spinning chorus. While we're almost certain they've given up caring by this point, the result may have scared off whatever fans she still has. ""

“'So tired of all this drama,' she sings before giving her opinion to her envious people in a loud and twisted chorus. The result will put off even the last of your fans, if they are still interested in [the song] by then. "

Music video

Filming for the music video began on February 22, 2013. The video premiered at the same time the song was released on April 16, 2013. The video is directed by Jam Sutton.

The three-minute and thirty-six second video shows Banks in a street fight with police officers riding a mechanical bull, footage of flying owls, and scenes showing portrait shots of Banks with her eyes replaced by copies of her mouth, who alternately rap and sing with their mouths to the music. Recurring elements in the video are individual eyes and a rotating yin-yang symbol.

Billboard recognized the video as an homage to Aaliyah's Are You That Somebody and wrote that it highlighted Banks '"nightmarish' 90s-inspired style".
