Hiro Murai

Hiro Murai (born 1983 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese - American filmmaker from Los Angeles . His best-known works include music videos for artists such as Childish Gambino , Earl Sweatshirt , Chet Faker , Flying Lotus , David Guetta , St. Vincent , The Shins , The Fray , Bloc Party , Massive Attack and Queens of the Stone Age . In 2013 he made the short film Clapping for the Wrong Reasons, a companion piece to Childish Gambino's second studio album, Because the Internet. Since 2016, he directed several episodes of the dramedy - Series Atlanta and worked there again with Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino together.

Life

Murai was born in the Japanese capital Tokyo in 1983 . His father was a songwriter and composer and later a music publisher . His mother was a housewife who supported him in his creative work from an early age. He moved to Los Angeles with his family at the age of nine. During his middle and high school years, he filmed familiar films with friends and attended a video production course. In Los Angeles, he later graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts .

After graduating, Murai worked as a freelance cameraman for numerous music videos , VFX and storyboarding projects, most notably for the filmmaker Ace Norton, whom he met in high school and who gave him his first job, a stop-motion video for the Band The Faint . After a while, Murai started making low budget videos .

His first music video as a director was Bloc Partys Signs in 2006 , which he produced with fellow film school students for about $ 2,000. In the following years he shot music videos for indie artists like Spoon and St. Vincent, but also for rappers like Earl Sweatshirt and pop artists like David Guetta .

In addition to the music videos, Murai also stages commercials for , among others, Gillette , Google , Microsoft , Nike and Sonos .

Together with Donald Glover , for whom he previously directed several music videos, he has been working on the television series Atlanta since 2016 . This was followed by directorial work for the series Legion and Barry .

Murais garnered huge attention in 2018 with the controversial music video for Childish Gambino's This Is America . It was viewed over 100 million times on YouTube just under two weeks after it was released .

In May 2018 Murai signed a production contract with FX Productions , where he works on new series concepts for FX. He is also in talks with 20th Century Fox for his first feature film.

The music film Guava Island starring Glover and Rihanna, directed by Murai, was released in April 2019 .

Murai is currently working on the serial production of the novel Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel . The shooting of the ten-part HBO's Max - miniseries began in January 2020th
