The Fray (dt. The engagement / The dispute ) is a four-piece American indie rock band from Denver .
Band history
Origin and early beginnings
Slade joined a band called Ember, which also included his later The Fray band members Dave Welsh and Ben Wysocki. Shortly afterwards the band was disbanded. In the summer of 2002, Slade ran into his former school friend by chance in a record store. The two did regular jam sessions, which resulted in them starting to write songs. Later, Slade's younger brother Caleb joined on bass and Zach Johnson on drums. Shortly after, Johnson left the group to attend an art school in New York , and Caleb was fired. This caused a rift in Slade's relationship with his brother, which inspired the hit single Over My Head (Cable Car) .
At the beginning The Fray did not have an official bass player, but Jimmy Stofer is on bass at their concerts. The Fray has not yet announced anything about a possible recording of Jimmy Stofer. Stofer can also be seen in the video from Over My Head (Cable Car) .
Ben Wysocki and Dave Welsh teamed up again with Slade to form The Fray with him and Joe King. In the same year EP was released by the newly formed group Movement. In 2003 they released the Reason EP. It got some local reviews there, particularly through Denver's Westword alternative newsweekly. Despite these ratings, the band struggled to get a single out on the market. The Denver Radio Station KTCL rejected eight of the songs sent in by The Fray until the band decided to send them in via cable car. The Fray played this song on a local KTCL radio show and the radio station received a large number of requests for the song shortly thereafter. By the end of 2005 it became one of the most played songs on KTCL.
Success with the general public
The band signed their contract with Epic and their debut album How to Save a Life was released on September 13, 2005 in the USA and finally in Germany on October 27, 2006, but the single Over My Head (Cable Car ) available in Germany. This album brought them success with a wider audience.
Aside from lead singing and playing the piano, Slade wrote the lyrics for this album based on his own experiences, particularly those of the first two singles, Over My Head (Cable Car) and How to Save a Life , which contributed most to her success.
Over My Head (Cable Car) , the album's first single, was written by Isaac based on his relationship with Brother Caleb:
“It is about a fight I got in with my brother, Caleb. After he graduated high school, we drifted apart and really hadn't spoken in a long time. One day we both realized that we needed to fight it out. We'd been friends for twenty years. That's a long time when you're only 23 years old. We fought it out, and he's one of my best friends today. "
While the song hit the charts internationally (it was in the top 25 of several countries), it was a huge hit in the band's home country, where it entered the top 10 on the Billboard charts .
The second single, as well as the album's title track, How to Save a Life , was written by Slade based on an experience he had as a mentor at a camp for teenagers with serious problems, Shelterwood in Denver :
“One of the youngsters I was paired up with was a musician. Here I was, a protected suburbanite, and he was just 17 and had all these problems. He was a recovering addict, coming out of a really tough teenage life. Thankfully, he was on his way out of that life, so he was able to really look back with some objectivity. The song is more of a memoir about his slow motion descent and all the relationships he lost along the way. "
The song reached number 3 on the Hot 100 charts and enjoyed worldwide success, and it also climbed into the top 5 in many other countries. The song is the band's most famous hit and enjoys worldwide fame.
Aside from Over My Head (Cable Car) and How to Save a Life , Slade wrote Look After You , the third single, for his then girlfriend and now wife Anna while she was living in Australia .
On December 7, 2006, the band was nominated for two Grammys : in the categories "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" ( Over My Head (Cable Car) ) and "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" ( How to Save a Life ).
The second studio album, The Fray , was released on February 3, 2009 in the United States . The first single from it is the song You Found Me . Again, Slade wrote the songs based on personal experience, especially You Found Me . He explained the meaning of the song in an interview:
“You Found Me is a tough song for me. It started from just a song with a lot of hate towards God. More of questions, "why" It's about the disappointment, the heartache, the let down that comes with life. Sometimes you're let down, sometimes you're the one who lets someone else down. It gets hard to know who you can trust, who you can count on. This song came out of a tough time, and I'm still right in the thick of it. There's some difficult circumstances my family and friends have been going through over the past year or so and can be overwhelming. It wears on me. It demands so much of my faith to keep believing, keep hoping in the unseen. Sometimes the tunnel has a light at the end, but usually they just look black as night. This song is about that feeling, and the hope that I still have, buried deep in my chest. "
The song reached the top 10 on the Hot 100 charts. You Found Me was one of the most successful singles in the USA in 2009 and after Over My Head (Cable Car) and How to Save a Life the band's third single, which reached more than 2 million downloads in the USA alone.
In May 2009 The Fray gave three concerts in Germany.
In the summer of 2014, the Australian DJ and producer Jiggers re-recorded the greatest success of the band How to Save a Life . The remix, accompanied by a house beat, was a great success. It was viewed several million times on YouTube within a few weeks.
