chronology
- How to Save a Life The Fray
(2009)

How to Save a Life is the first studio album by the American alternative rock band The Fray .

Emergence

After the band had independently released two EPs ( Movement and Reason ), they were looking for a record company to bring a full album out on the market. They gave the single cable car to the KTCL radio station in Denver , Colorado . The song got considerable airtime and landed in the station's top 30 most played songs, even though the band did not yet have a record deal. Originally they had submitted seven other songs, but all of them were rejected by the broadcaster. After KTCL started playing the song, other larger stations added the song to their playlist. Thus, The Fray also gained a certain national recognition. The local weekly Westword named The Fray Best New Band in 2004 .

Eventually the record company Epic Records became aware of the band. On December 17, 2004, the company - which would later become part of Sony BMG - signed the band. The first single was Cable Car , but the record company decided to rename the song Over my Head (Cable Car) .

Four singles from the album have been released. The single She Is was released exclusively in Australia.

Over my Head (Cable Car)

The band's debut single, reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song helped the album into the top 20 of the album charts, the Billboard 200 , after it was previously represented in the newcomer charts.

The single is only available for download, but there are also a few CDs of the song that the band distributed to fans during a performance. The EP also features the singles Heaven Forbid and Hundred . In the UK, Over my Head (Cable Car) was released as the second single, after How to Save a Life .

How to Save a Life

How to Save a Life is The Fray's most commercially successful song. It was published on the American national holiday , July 4th, reached number 3 on the American Billboard Hot 100 and achieved top chart positions in Europe and Canada . The single was released exclusively as a download and went twice platinum . The Fray received a Grammy nomination for this song too, but got nothing. Due to a premature release of the song in the UK by the radio station BBC Radio 1 , the single was released five weeks before the scheduled number one, Over my Head (Cable Car) . The CD also contains the single She Is , which was released exclusively in Australia, in an acoustic version.

The song was used in several television series, for example Scrubs - The Beginners (5th season), Cold Case - No Victim Is Ever Forgotten or Grey's Anatomy (2nd season).

After the music coordinator of " Grey's Anatomy " attended a concert by The Fray, she was so enthusiastic about the performance of How to Save a Life that she decided to include the song in a final sequence of an episode. After the episode aired, the song became a Top 100 Hit and the producers decided to use the song to promote the third season. Just a week after the advertising began, the single jumped from 51st to 29th and ended up at number 3.

After Grey's Anatomy, the series " Scrubs " used the song - also in a final sequence - in the episode "My Lunch with Cox".
