The Shins is an American rock band from Portland , Oregon , formed in 1996 by James Mercer in Albuquerque , New Mexico . She is an important representative of so-called indie pop . The frontman and sole songwriter Mercer is the only constant member of the band.
Band history
The debut album of the band, which is rather unknown in German-speaking countries, is called When You Land Here, It's Time To Return . James Mercer , Jesse Sandoval, Marty Crandall and Neal Langford, who was later replaced by Dave Hernandez, recorded the record as Flake Music on Omnibus Records. However, the publication received little attention even in her home country. The band only became more successful when they changed instruments and names, but not their style.
In November 2000, The Shins signed a record deal with Sub Pop . In the same year their "second debut" Oh, Inverted World appeared , which surprised the band and record company with immense sales figures. The third album is called Chutes Too Narrow and was released in 2003.
The best known song of the band is New Slang . It gained a certain degree of popularity in Germany, thanks to both the series Scrubs and the film Garden State . In America, it was also included in a commercial for the McDonald’s fast food restaurant . The band also had a live appearance in the TV series Gilmore Girls , which is also known in Germany , in which they present the song So Says I in a club in Florida during spring break .
Her album Wincing the Night Away was released in the USA on January 23, 2007, and three days later in Germany. This was followed by a tour through the USA and Europe, which led the band to Germany for two concerts at the beginning of April 2007, which took place in Cologne and Berlin with the American indie rock band Viva Voce as support.
After the interim collaboration between Mercer and DJ Danger Mouse under the project name Broken Bells , he reactivated the Shins with a new line-up. The fifth album Port of Morrow - produced by Greg Kurstin - was released in March 2012 on Columbia Records .
Her album Heartworms was released on March 10, 2017 . Former keyboardist Richard Swift died on July 3, 2018 at the age of 41 in Tacoma , Washington .
criticism
Richard Kämmerlings wrote in 2007 in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung : “If only five or six rock bands are left in the collective memory of our strangely stylish decade, then the“ Shins ”should be one of them. [...] Simply an epoch-making band. "
Johanna Merhof wrote in the daily newspaper Die Welt : “Songs to sink into. [...] A relaxed shrug as long as these songs exist. In which one can sink so much that they become a golden whole. With a warm coat that you put on against the cold of the world. A better hug than the song 'A Comet Appears' is hard to imagine. "
