Heartworms is the fifth studio album by the American indie band The Shins . It was released on March 10, 2017 on Columbia Records .

Creation and publication

For the first time front man James Mercer produced an album of the band himself. An exception was So Now What , which was produced by then band member Richard Swift in 2014 and was part of the soundtrack of Zach Braff's comedy Wish I Was Here . Mercer also wrote all the songs, including So Now What , himself. On October 26, 2016, the first single, Dead Alive , was released. The second single, Name for You , followed on January 5, 2017. The album itself was released on March 10, 2017. Further single releases followed with Half a Million on June 13, 2017 and Cherry Hearts on October 31, 2017.

The album received mostly positive reviews from critics . Heartworms achieved a score of 73% on Metacritic .

Jeremias Heppeler from laut.de thinks the album is good, but criticizes the lack of further development. Heather Phares attests Heartworms, however, to have the largest musical range among the works of James Mercer and awards 3.5 out of 5 stars on allmusic.com . Evan Rytlewski from Pitchfork Media also sees the album as confirmation of the success of the first Shins albums. Mercer is still able to write a song that sticks.

In the album charts the album reached u. a. 20th place on Billboard 200 in the United States and 19th place in Great Britain. In the German-speaking countries, the highest prices were in Germany at 61, in Austria at 52 and in Switzerland at 44.
