Charts and reception

In the German-speaking countries, the album reached the Top 40 (Germany: 33rd place; Austria: 35th place and Switzerland: 33rd place) and stayed in the charts for a week. In the United Kingdom, Port of Morrow rose to number 11 and was on the charts for two weeks, while it peaked at number 3 in the United States. The album was also in the top 10 in Norway at number 9 and in Australia at number 4. Furthermore, Port of Morrow was placed at number 20 in the Netherlands, number 24 in Belgium, number 35 in Sweden and number 35 in Denmark 25th, 48th in Spain and 17th in New Zealand.

Allmusic's Heather Phares awarded the album 3.5 out of 5 stars. The album doesn't sound like the Shins are used to, but most of the songs are tempting enough to satisfy most fans. Erich Renz from laut.de criticizes that a lot on the album is "either too polished or [...] absolutely dull". Larry Fitzmaurice from Pitchfork sees it differently . For him, the album is the triumphant return of a musical project that was previously exposed to the risk of drifting from the indie corner into the mainstream. But with Port of Morrow Mercer overshadows everything that he had created musically with the Shins so far.
