The Automatic is a British indie rock band from Cowbridge near Cardiff .

Band history

Robin "Rob" Hawkins, James "Frost", Alex "Pennie" and Iwan Griffiths grew up together in Cowbridge, a small Welsh village. At 16, Hawkins and Frost formed the band White Rabbit . Griffiths later joined and Pennie eventually completed the group. The four later renamed themselves The Automatic .

In 2004 they recorded their first demos in a studio and landed a management contract. They spent the second half of the year in the rehearsal room working on new material. Then they toured South Wales and in May 2005 they recorded the songs Monster and Rats with producer Richard Jackson, arousing the interest of the indie label B-Unique Records . Two months later, The Automatic signed a recording deal. In October they went on tour with The Ordinary Boys as well as Hard-Fi and produced their debut single Recover with the support of Ian Broudie , which, however, had little success.

At the end of 2005, the Welsh began recording their debut album Not Accepted Anywhere . The tracks were produced with the help of Richard Jackson in Cardiff and Steve Harris in Liverpool and Lincoln.

In May 2006 they performed alongside Boy Kill Boy , ¡Forward, Russia! and The Long Blondes take part in the NME New Bands tour. The second single, Raoul , followed on March 27th, reaching number 32 in the UK singles chart. Their big breakthrough came with their third release, Monster . Released on June 5th, the track climbed to position four.

Not Accepted Anywhere hit UK stores a few days later, rose to number three on the UK charts and became a hit album. The publication in Germany was canceled by Universal for unknown reasons. In autumn 2006 they released Recover again and this time the song reached position 25. A tour of Germany planned for September was postponed because the record label requested new material, but in January 2007 the Welsh made up for their canceled gigs in Germany.

In September 2007 keyboardist and founding member Alex Pennie left the band. A month later, the band announced that Paul Mullen, the ex-vocalist of Yourcodenameis: milo , would be the rhythm guitarist for The Automatic.

On August 25, 2008, the second album was released with the title This Is a Fix . It missed the top 40 jump, but the single Steve McQueen became the band's second biggest hit. On March 8, 2010 the third album was released with the title Tear the Signs Down . It couldn't get into the charts. After the failure, the members turned to other projects. The Automatic was not officially dissolved, but no further releases have appeared since then.
