Savages is a British post-punk band from London consisting of four women.

Band history

The French Camille Berthomier came to London in 2006 and founded the duo John & Jehn with her compatriot Nicolas Congé (aka Johnny Hostile) , using the stage name Jehnny Beth. Later they hired Gemma Thompson as a noise guitarist as well as for background vocals and keyboards . Thompson then asked Berthomier if she would like to sing in her new band. In October 2011, Berthomier and Thompson decided to start a second band called Savages . Both brought in Ayşe Hassan as bassist and Fay Milton on drums and in January 2012 the quartet had their first appearance in the opening act for British Sea Power . They were discovered by the manager of Sigur Rós and in June of the same year brought out the debut single Flying to Berlin / Husbands and later another single called I Am Here on Berthomier's and Congé's own label Pop Noire . They received positive reviews for their releases and live performances, they were invited to Later with Jools Holland , and at the end of the year they were among the nominees for Sound of 2013 , a BBC prediction of who could break through the following year.

Savages finished their debut album Silence Yourself produced by Congé in the spring of 2013 and released it on the US label Matador Records . It was not only successful in the British but also in the US charts. In the following years, two collab albums with the Japanese noise rock band Bo Ningen and with the New Zealand duo A Dead Forest Index were released .

In early 2016, the band released their second album, Adore Life , again produced by Congé . Apart from England and the USA, this time it was also successful in many European countries. Like its predecessor, it was nominated for the Mercury Prize for best British music album.

Since then, the band members have been involved in other projects: guitarist Gemma Thompson plays in the new trio Unmoor Diva. Bassist Ayşe Hassan and drummer Fay Milton founded the band 180 dB. Singer Jehnny Beth's first solo album was released in June 2020 under the title "To Love Is To Live".

Trivia

Little is known about the band members. They consider it redundant to explain oneself outside of their art. We learned about Berthomier that she was born on Christmas Eve 1984 in Poitiers ( France ) and that she has been in a relationship with Nicolas Congé for more than a decade, who is among other things the band's producer. Thompson married Sam Sherry, a member of the A Dead Forest Index , on April 21, 2016 .
