Stormzy
Stormzy (* 26. July 1993 , real name Michael Omari ) is a British Grime - Rapper .
biography
Michael Omari aka Stormzy is of Ghanaian descent. In his youth he played mostly grim music in the London clubs in his area . Later he developed more and more into a rapper. At the end of 2013 he started to publish his freestyle series Wicked Skengman on the internet. He quickly made a name for himself, including with his first EP Dreamers Disease , which was released in 2014. In the same year he was named best grim musician at the MOBO Awards . At the turn of the year, he was ranked 3rd in the BBC's annual forecast of the most promising performers Sound of 2015 .
In March 2015, Know Me From released his first single, which made it into the UK charts . The follow-up single Wicked Skengman 4 from his freestyle series became his first top 20 hit. This year he was again named best grime act and also best male act at the MOBO Awards. In December he performed his song Shut Up in a boxing match for Anthony Joshua . The song, which until then had only reached number 59 in the charts, then climbed into the top 10 and a fan campaign was started to bring it to number one during Christmas week. The Christmas hit has a special meaning in England. However, the single did not get past 8th place.
At the Brit Awards in 2017 , he joined with Ed Sheeran on.
His debut album Gang Signs & Prayer was released in February 2017 and reached number 1 in the UK charts. The following year he won the Brit Awards for Album of the Year and Best Male Artist.
In 2018, Stormzy, who was not in college, donated two scholarships to black students at the University of Cambridge , which, according to the university, led to a sharp increase in both applications and admissions. In June 2019 he was the first black artist to headline the Glastonbury Festival . The American news magazine Time named him one of the Next Generation Leaders of 2019 in October 2019. His second album Heavy Is the Head again reached number 1 in England and was able to further increase its international success. At the Brit Awards in early 2020 he was named best British artist a second time.
