Kehlani
Kehlani (born Kehlani Ashley Parrish ; * 24. April 1995 ) is an American R & B - singer and songwriter .
Youth and private life
Kehlani grew up in Oakland , California . She describes her ethnicity as a mixture of "black, white, native American & Spanish". Kehlani was raised by her aunt as her father died when she was young and her mother was imprisoned. She aspired to a dance career at the Juilliard School , but suffered a serious knee injury in junior high school, so she devoted herself to singing. She attended the Oakland School of Arts with a focus on dance. Kehlani was inspired by her aunt, who only listened to R&B and neo-soul . Kehlani was dating R&B singer PartyNextDoor (real name Jahron Anthony Brathwaite) before dating basketball player Kyrie Irving in 2016 . Shortly after separating from him, Kehlani confirmed a suicide attempt on Instagram , among other things due to psychological stress from social media - shit storms due to rumors of cheating with ex PartyNextDoor. Kehlani rejected the rumors of cheating on Instagram and emphasized that PartyNextDoor "saved her life". At the end of March 2019, the singer gave birth to her first daughter.
Career
Start of career with PopLyFe (2009-2013)
Kehlani's singing career began as a lead singer in the pop group PopLyFe. The group won fourth place in the sixth season "Americas Got Talent" in the finals. After the last appearance, judge Piers Morgan told her that Kehlani had the talent to be successful without the group. Kehlani left the group after America's Got Talent due to some administrative and contractual disputes. For fear of being sued by management, she took a six-month break from singing. From 2012 to 2013 Kehlani did not have a permanent home and slept on strange sofas. Moving to Los Angeles with no legal guardian and no job, she often began stealing groceries to support herself. In 2013, Nick Cannon, the host of America's Got Talent, invited her to join a rap group. She initially accepted, but couldn't identify with the group's musical style, so she moved back to Oakland. There she released her first song on Soundcloud called "ANTISUMMERLUV". Then she got another call from Cannon, who provided her with an apartment in Los Angeles and a studio for recording.
Since 2014
Kehlani released her first mixtape, Cloud 19 , in 2014 . The album was voted one of the 50 best listed albums of 2014 by Complex. It was also listed by Pitchfork under "Overlookes mixtapes of 2014", VICE titled her as a great R&B singer at the beginning of her career. The song 'til the morning was very popular on Billboard.
At the end of April 2014 she released her first album You Should be Here . According to Billboard, it was "the first major R&B album of the year". It reached number one on the iTunes RnB / Soul chart and number two on R&B albums in general. The album includes guest appearances from Chance the Rapper and BJ the Chicago Kid . A week after her mixtape was released, Kehlani signed her contract with Atlantic Records. She went on the "You Should Be Here Tour" from then on. Rolling Stone named her one of the "10 new artists you should know".
In 2016 she was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Urban Album”.
