Rex Orange County is the stage name of the English musician Alexander O'Connor (born May 4, 1998 in Grayshott , Hampshire ).

biography

Alex O'Connor grew up in a village in southern England. He sang in the school choir and taught himself the drums. He was accepted at the renowned BRIT School in London and learned to play guitar, piano and how to use production software. During school he also produced his own songs. At the age of 17 he finished his first album Bcos U Will Never B Free and distributed it over the Internet. From his nickname OC for O'Connor , which is also the abbreviation for Orange County in the USA (see also the series The OC , German OC, California ), he made his stage name Rex Orange County .

Further publications followed and he gained more and more followers. Mainly he moves in indie pop , but he mixes it with hip-hop , neo-soul and jazz elements, which gives him its own sound. When he released his second self-produced album Apricot Princess in 2017 , he was listed in the Heatseekers Charts in the USA and found himself in the top 10 of the indie charts. He had become so popular with self-publications that Tyler, the Creator included him as a guest on his album Flower Boy . After that, the breakthrough was forecast for 2018: in the BBC's Sound of 2018 survey , he came in second.

In fact, not much happened that year except for a single with Randy Newman . It wasn't until mid-2019 that he had enough new material for another album. In September he had his first hit in the official UK charts with the pre-released song 10/10 . At the end of October he finally released his third album, Pony , which actually brought him to the front. It debuted at number 5 in the UK and number 3 in the US. In Canada, he even stood a week at No. 1 .
