Marina (singer)
Marina Lambrini Diamandis (born October 10, 1985 in Abergavenny , Wales ; Greek Μαρίνα-Λαμπρινή Διαμαντής ; pronunciation : [ ðʝamaˈ (n) dis ]), professionally known as Marina , formerly Marina and the Diamonds , is a British singer-songwriter . She rose to fame in the UK after ranking second as the most promising newcomer in the BBC Sound of 2010 annual poll . Her former addition "The Diamonds" was based on Diamandis' real family name and did not stand for her accompanying band.
Life
Marina Diamandis was born in 1985 in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire , Wales to a Greek and Welsh woman . She attended Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls, where her talent was discovered. Their music style ranges from keyboard-based ballads to faster, New Wave- oriented songs. Among the musicians who inspired her in an interview, she counted The Distillers , No Doubt , Patti Smith , Kate Bush and Madonna .
After her parents divorced, she moved to Greece with her father at the age of 16. Two years later she returned to Wales to study. After dropping out of college at 18, she moved to London , where she completed two months of dance training. In 2005 she took singing lessons at West London Music School for a year and sang on West End musicals such as The Lion King .
Career
2007–2009: beginnings
Diamandis recorded his first songs with Apple's GarageBand software . She found a producer for some of her songs through the Gumtree website for which she paid £ 500 . Their first release, called Mermaid Vs. Sailor EP , released in November 2007, included all of these songs. The EP was burned on CD by Diamandis himself and distributed on their MySpace page. An estimated 70 copies have been sold.
In January 2008, Neon Gold Records talent scout Derek Davis became aware of her. Davis booked her for the opening act for the Australian singer Gotye , where the label Warner discovered her and got her a record deal with 679 recordings. In the same year she released her first single, a double A-side with the songs Obsessions and Mowgli's Road . This was followed by their second EP The Crown Jewels EP , which also contained their second single I Am Not a Robot . On December 7, 2009 she was put on the list of nominees for the BBC Sound of 2010 , where she came in second behind Ellie Goulding .
2010–2011: The Family Jewels
Diamandis' debut album The Family Jewels was released in February 2010 in the UK and in May in Germany. It reached number five on the UK album charts, where it was awarded gold. Diamandis recorded the album together with Pascal Gabriel, who has already worked for artists such as Marc Almond , Yello , New Order and Kylie Minogue . A re-release of the single Mowgli's Road served the album as a lead single. In February 2010 their first tour started, which included seven concerts in Great Britain , Ireland and continental Europe . After the release of their third EP The American Jewels on the American label Chop Shop Records, their debut album was also released in the USA.
In the spring of 2010, Diamandis worked on new material with the American songwriter and producer Benny Blanco and the guitarist Dave Sitek. Her single Hollywood , an indie pop song about the seductiveness of the “ American Dream ”, was also released in spring 2010. The song reached the top 15 of the single charts in both Germany and Great Britain and made Diamandis internationally known. Even before its German release, the single was played by many radio stations and was therefore ranked twelfth in the German radio charts. In May 2010 the song rose to number 15 in the German single charts . In Austria it was published at the same time and reached position 17.
2011-2013: Electra Heart
In April 2012 their second album entitled Electra Heart was released in the UK. The German publication took place in May of the same year. It reached number 1 on the charts in Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland. In July 2012, the album was released with a slightly modified song list in the USA, where it reached number 31 in the charts.
In October 2011 the song Radioactive , produced by Stargate , was released in the UK. It reached number 25 on the charts. This song is only found on the deluxe version of the album. The album also includes collaborations with Greg Kurstin , Rick Nowels and Liam Howe, who produced most of the songs on their first album.
The first single was released in the UK in April 2012, the song Primadonna , which was written with Julie Frost and edited by Dr. Luke , Cirkut and Diplo was produced. The German release took place in May 2012. The song reached number 11 in the British charts, in Germany it was number 18 and in Austria it was number 3. It reached number 16 in Switzerland.
The song Power & Control was released in the UK in July 2012 as a second single. The video, shot again by Casper Balslev, premiered in May 2012. In July 2012, the song How to Be a Heartbreaker , which was initially only on the American version of the album, was the third single in Great Britain or the second Single released in the US.
2014-2016: Froot
In February 2013, Diamandis announced that she had started work on her new album. The song Froot , written by her , the title track of her third studio album, was released in October 2014. All songs on the album were written by Diamandis and produced with David Kosten . On November 9, 2014, she announced the track list including the artwork via her Twitter account. After that, another song from the album was presented every month. Originally, a total of six songs from the album were to be released before the album was released in April 2015. However, because the album was already on the Internet in mid-February 2015, the release was brought forward to March.
In addition to a tour for the album in North America and Europe, Diamandis was seen at numerous festivals in 2015, including in March at the Lollapalooza in Brazil, in April at the Coachella Festival in California and in June at the Governors Ball Music Festival on Governors Island in New York. In March 2016 she also played at Lollapalooza in Argentina, Brazil and Chile. In August 2018, she announced that her music would only appear under the name Marina in the future because she wanted to be perceived as a person and not as a figure.
Since 2018: Love + Fear
In November 2018 the song Baby was released , a collaboration with Clean Bandit and Luis Fonsi . The first single from the double album Love + Fear , the song Handmade Heaven , was released on February 8, 2019. The second song Superstar was released on March 1, 2019. Love , the first part of the album, was released on April 4, 2019, while the second part, Fear , followed on April 26, 2019. Videos for the songs Orange Trees and To Be Human followed between the release of both sides of the double album . Diamandis has been on tour in Great Britain and the United States since the end of April 2019.
In the Love + Fear era, Diamandis decided to rebrand. Since then she no longer appears under Marina And The Diamonds, but as MARINA . She said she made this decision because she would rather be seen as a human rather than an artificial character.
Music genre
Diamandis described her music in an interview as "experimental pop music ". Her musical style is described very diverse by the professional world and often compared with that of other musicians:
“Marina Diamandis [...] mixes the naturalness of the young Kim Wilde , the chutzpah Lily Allen , the good moments of the early Pat Benatar and the natural inviolability of Abba [...] on ' The Family Jewels ' . Even nicer than the snappy, instantly memorable hit material like 'I Am Not A Robot', 'Mowgli's Road', 'Are You Satisfied?' and 'Hollywood' are the sincere confessions in the more inconspicuous pieces. "
“Marina's songs have it all. They're catchy and edgy at the same time - catchy enough for the charts, edgy enough to stir the indie environment. 'Oh my God, you look just like Shakira / No no, you're Catherine Zeta / Actually, my name's Marina' she faces in 'Hollywood', her reckoning with the dream of dreams ('Living in a movie scene puking American dreams ... ') and presents herself as a wanderer between worlds. […] Marina is […] the missing link between Siouxsie and Lady Gaga . […] Irony like Katy Perry ? Marina Diamandis passes every authenticity check. Sometimes your Hi-Energy-Freak-Pop drifts into the esoteric - not even that seems artificial or made up, but has charm. "
"Diamandis [...] has [...] a voice that is undoubtedly recognizable in terms of timbre and performance and [...] serves some references - that goes from ABBA and Kate Bush to Tori Amos and sometimes P! Nk - of course, in the list also Kate Nash and especially Florence Welch aka Florence + the Machine is not missing. The songs themselves are strongly knitted around this voice and offer powerful, sometimes even exuberant arrangements that do not compromise on polyphony . "
