Electra Heart is the second studio album by Welsh artist Marina Diamandis, known by her stage name Marina and the Diamonds . The album reached number 1 on the album charts in Great Britain , Ireland and Scotland . It is her first number 1 album.

background

During her 2010 tour, Diamandis announced that she had started work on her second studio album. The song Living Dead was the first new song that she wrote and recorded for the album. In August 2011, she published a video on her YouTube channel called Part 1: Fear and Loathing . The video was shot by Caspar Balslev. Two weeks later, on August 22, 2011, a video also shot by Casper Balslev with the name Part 2: Radioactive followed . Another video, Part 3: The Archetypes, followed on December 15, 2011. On November 20, 2011, she also released a demo version of the song Starring Role and on February 27, 2012 the song Homewrecker on her channel . In addition, long before the album was released, demo versions of the songs Living Dead , Sex Yeah and Power & Control were uploaded to the Internet against their will .

On March 1, 2012, she announced the album's song list and cover on Twitter and Facebook . On March 5th, she finally announced the four bonus tracks of the deluxe version.

Shortly before the album was released, at the request of her fans, she digitally published a mini-EP on her homepage, the Primadonna Exclusive Acoustic EP , which contains the songs Primadonna , Starring Role , Lies and Homewrecker as an acoustic version.

On July 10, 2012 the album was also released in America with a slightly changed song list. The standard version features the song Sex Yeah , one of the four bonus songs of the European version, as well as Radioactive and a new song called How to Be a Heartbreaker . The songs Living Dead , Lonely Hearts Club and Buy the Stars are no longer on the album.

Concept and influence

During an interview, Diamandis stated that the album was like a short story, similar to a 1970s Americana film. The whole album is built around the title character Electra Heart , which, according to the singer, is not an alter ego , but rather a method to depict parts of the American Dream with the content of the Greek tragedy . The songs on the album are divided into different archetypes , the prima donna , the homewrecker (German adulterer ), the teen idle (play on words with teenie idol and the adjective idle , in German about lazy adolescents ) and the Su-Barbie-A (stylized form von Suburbia , in German about suburban Barbie ). These four types represent Diamandis' own views on the facets of the female personality. The idea of building the songs on the album around the character Electra Heart and the four archetypes came to her during the time she was touring the USA after the release of The Family Jewels . As inspirations for the album, she cited artists such as Madonna and Marilyn Monroe , but also Marie Antoinette .

promotion

Electra Heart was accompanied by an 11-part series of videos. These were published between August 2011 and August 2013. The first video for the album song Fear & Loathing was released on August 8, 2011. The last video, which belongs to the previously unreleased song Electra Heart of the same name , was released exactly two years later. With this video the album era came to an end.
