The Family Jewels (German: Die Familienjuwelen ) is the debut album by the Welsh singer Marina Diamandis , better known as Marina & The Diamonds . It was released in Germany on May 14, 2010 under the Warner label.

In the UK, the album was awarded gold for 100,000 copies sold.

Background information

Diamandis recorded her first songs in the bedroom at home with Apple's GarageBand software . In January 2008, the talent scout of the music label Neon Gold Records, Derek Davies, became aware of the musician. He organized her an appearance in the supporting act of the Australian singer Gotye , where the label Warner discovered her and she finally signed the record deal with 679 Recordings.

The recordings for The Family Jewels took place mainly in England, especially London, but also in the La Ruine Studio in France. Diamandis said in an interview that the recordings took longer than expected because she missed the performances on stage very much and could therefore concentrate poorly. The recordings were completed in the week of October 27, 2009.

Songs

The lyrics of the songs on The Family Jewels are shaped by social criticism , modern social values, family life and female sexuality. Diamandis, however, avoids writing about a very popular subject in songs:

“I don't sing about love. I think my album is more about life - who you want to be and that you have to challenge yourself and your world. I think that's different. "

- Marina Diamandis

The first song on the album Are You Satisfied? asks the listener whether he is satisfied with an average, simple life and whether it is really necessary to lie to achieve his goals. Oh no! is about the determination to take your life into your own hands and not let anyone talk you into it anymore. The Outsider describes self-doubt and the feeling of not belonging and feeling isolated.

The reviews of The Family Jewels were quite positive. Deborah Katona from Laut.de praised “especially Marina's organ, a pleasant alto voice that is a rarity in today's pop world ... From ballads to strong power pop to glamorous numbers. Everything finds its place ... Marina remains individual despite high hit parade compatibility. And delivers an entertaining debut. "

Frank Lähnmann from Rolling Stone was enthusiastic about Diamandi's debut: “There may not be a better pop album - in the classic sense - than her debut this year ... Marina Diamandis passes every authenticity check. Sometimes your hi-energy freak pop drifts into the esoteric - not even that seems artificial or made up, but has charm. We put up with this vibration surfer. And also the ABBA refrain from Shampaign. "

Maximilian Nitzke from CDStarts.de also found the work to be good, but criticized the lack of innovation: “Here, in the best pop fashion, the house is turned upside down. Marina ultimately doesn't bring anything new with her family jewels, but joins the wide range presented by the young women of the new decade ... The tracks have been laid and the somewhat half-baked mixture of sophisticated pop music and club tracks has yet to be found. "
