Shpend Ahmeti

Shpend Ahmeti (born April 18, 1978 in Pristina , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Kosovar Albanian politician ( LVV ). He has been mayor of his native Pristina since December 2013 .

education

Shpend Ahmeti studied business administration and economics at the American University in Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad between 1996 and 2000 . There he was also a senator between 1999 and 2002 and later chairman of the university's collegial body.

Ahmeti continued his studies in the United States . He graduated with a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University with a focus on Economic and Political Development. Since 2005 he has been a lecturer in Public Policy and International Economic Policy at the American University in Kosovo .

Political career

On November 5, 2010, Shpend Ahmeti, together with Ilir Deda and other Harvard University graduates, founded the Fryma e Re party , which took part in the parliamentary elections in Kosovo 2010/2011 but was unable to pass the five percent hurdle. On March 31, 2011, Fryma e Re merged with the citizens' movement Vetëvendosje! (VV). Ahmeti became the deputy party chairman of the VV.

In the local elections in Kosovo in 2013, Shpend Ahmeti ran as a candidate against Isa Mustafa ( LDK ), the long-time mayor of the Kosovar capital. The turnout in Pristina was 50.8 percent and in the first round of elections on November 3, neither of the two achieved the necessary majority, so that a second round was ordered for December 1. In this case, Ahmeti was able to win 51.8 percent of the votes and thus achieve the majority. The city's new mayor was sworn in on December 26th, heralding the end of the 15-year era of the Partia Demokratike e Kosovës in the capital. After taking office, Ahmeti resigned from his post as vice chairman of the VV.

Private

Shpend Ahmeti is married to Ardiana Gjinolli-Ahmeti. They are parents of their daughter Tea and their son Anri. In addition to Albanian, he also speaks fluent English , Serbo-Croatian , Macedonian and Bulgarian . He also has knowledge of German .
