history
Alongside the PDK , the LDK is one of the leading political parties in Kosovo. It was founded on December 23, 1989 as a resistance organization against the Serbian minority rule, among others by Ibrahim Rugova , who later became President of Kosovo .
In its early days, Western observers viewed it as a mixture of a club of notables and a mass movement; many functionaries were members of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia before they joined the LDK . With the emergence of the more radical KLA at the end of the 1990s and their successor parties, it lost its attractiveness among some Kosovar Albanians.
