Fatmir Sejdiu ( Serbo-Croatian  Фатмир Сејдију / Fatmir Sejdiju , born October 23, 1951 in Pakaštica near Podujevo , Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia ) was President of Kosovo from February 2006 and from February 17, 2008 to September 27, 2010 the first President of the Republic of Kosovo, after the unilateral declaration of independence .

Before the election, Sejdiu was Professor of Legal History at Prishtina University .

Life

Fatmir Sejdiu attended elementary school and high school in Podujevo, then he studied law at the University of Pristina, received his doctorate in law and finally became a professor. Sejdiu was in 1989 after the establishment of the Kosovo Albanian LDK by Ibrahim Rugova party general secretary. In this position he maintained relations with Kosovar Albanians abroad. He later led the LDK as parliamentary group leader in the Kosovo parliament . Most recently he was a member of the parliamentary presidium. He was considered to be Rugova's confidante and the second man behind the party founder. After the NATO invasion of Kosovo, he was one of the authors of the constitution of Kosovo (the so-called "constitutional framework" ).

After Rugova died as incumbent president, Sejdiu was elected as his successor on February 10, 2006 in the third ballot with 80 out of 120 votes by parliament. His party LDK , their coalition party Alliance for the Future of Kosovo AAK , the ORA party and the political representatives of the Bosnian and Turkish minorities who have come together in the "G-6 +" group voted for Sejdiu . Sejdiu resigned as President of Kosovo on September 27, 2010 after the Constitutional Court ruled that an incumbent president may not be the chairman of a party at the same time. Sejdiu had only let his office as party leader of the LDK rest since he took office as president in 2006. According to the Kosovar constitution, his successor was temporarily the President of the Parliament Jakup Krasniqi ( PDK ).

Fatmir Sejdiu is married to Musafere Sejdiu and has three sons. In addition to Albanian , he also speaks Serbian , French and English .

Create

Sejdiu is an advocate of complete independence for Kosovo and a staunch supporter of non-violence. As a moderate politician, he always advocated the non-violent struggle for independence from Serbia . Unlike many leading politicians in Kosovo, he did not have a military career. During the Kosovo war between Serbia, NATO and the UÇK Liberation Army in 1999, he forbade his sons to carry weapons. He is therefore also an acceptable interlocutor for political representatives of the Serbs in Kosovo.
