Scared to Be Lonely ( German  fear of being lonely ) is a song by the Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix . This is sung by the British - Kosovar singer Dua Lipa . The Future Bass song was released as a single on January 27, 2017 via Martin Garrix 'own record label "STMPD RCRDS" . Furthermore, the distribution of Epic Amsterdam and its major label Sony Netherlands was supported.

background

Producer Martin Garrix

Scared to Be Lonely was written by Martin Garrix, Giorgio Tuinfort, Nathaniel Campany, Kyle Shearer, Georgia Ku Overton. Production was completed on December 28, 2016. The premiere took place on December 31, 2016 during his performance at AVA-NYE in Myanmar, which quickly made several recordings online. As a result of the short recordings, Lipa was suspected to be the singer of the song, which was supported by her tweet "Guess the cats out of the bag ..." (German: "I think the cat is out of the bag"). Furthermore, it was finally confirmed by Garrix through an Instagram post on January 15, 2017, on which the singer can be seen. The Dutchman confirmed the release date on January 18, 2017 in an interview with the Dutch radio station "QMusic NL".

In an interview with "Idolator" he told the story of its origins:

“I've been to the studio so often. We had different opinions and ideas that we pursued. Then there was an A&R meeting with my record label and I had seven different songs that were potential follow-up works. This ended up with a whole new number that will be the one. She feels like the right one, because she gives me exactly the euphoric feeling [like In the Name of Love], but with even more profound lyrics and even more emotion, which are important for me for a good song. The official single cover leaked on the Reddit forum on January 19, 2017 . It's set up similarly to In the Name of Love . Here, too, you can see Martin Garrix on the right and his female singing partner on the left. In this case, however, Garrix and Lipa are looking at each other and the background is also different. In In the Name of Love , Garrix and Rexha stand in front of the pool of a Hollywood Hills villa, which alludes to the music video and, in keeping with the filming of Scared to Be Lonely in Scotland, they stand in front of a natural, hilly landscape around Edinburgh lying under a cloudy sky.

In advance, Garrix also uploaded a picture on Instagram that shows him in the dark in the middle of a desolate landscape. Only the moon can be seen above him, in whose light he is standing. Many suspected that this would turn out to be a single cover because of the allusion to being alone.

Musical and content

The song is based on 4/4 time and the tempo is 138 bpm . The song begins with the first verse sung by Dua Lipa. During this, no kick can be heard in the first half, a trap-typical kick only sounds in the second. This disappears again in the course of the first part of the chorus, in the second part a clap occurs once per bar, which is displaced by a dull kick emerging from the background that alludes to the drop faster and faster. This appears in the typical future bass style and shows strong parallels to its predecessor In the Name of Love .

The lyrics sung by Dua Lipa describe how the lyric self begins to question its relationship with another person. At first it looks back at the past time and praises the relationship between the two people, but over time it expresses doubts that it is no longer the same and begins to raise questions about what it is. In particular, it suspects that the relationship is just an attempt to escape the fear of remaining lonely.

"Is it just our bodies?
Are we both losing our minds?
Is the only reason you're holding me tonight ...
'Cause we're scared to be lonely?
Do we need somebody ...
Just to feel like we're alright?
Is the only reason you're holding me tonight
'Cause we're scared to be lonely? "

“Is it just our bodies?
Are we losing our thoughts?
Is the only reason you're holding me tonight ...
Because we're scared to be lonely?
Do we
need someone ... just to feel good?
Is the only reason you're holding me tonight ...
Because we're scared of being lonely? "

reception

criticism

The reactions to the song were mostly positive. While Dua Lipa's singing in particular was praised as well as the harmony of the song, the song has also been heavily compared to In the Name of Love . The criticism website "Thomasbleach" expressed itself in this form:

"Working with Dua Lipa" Scared to Be Lonely "is a general pop / dance track that could be the sister of" In The Name of Love ". If we didn't already have this song, I would praise this track because it is brilliant as a single piece. Dua's vocals are superb, the lyrics are completely related, the beat breakdown is great, and the chorus is great. However, Martin Garrix has already used this structure. "

- Thomasbleach

Critic Joe Carden of "The Edge" wrote that Scared to Be Lonely would miss any target group and that the harmony did not work as intended.

“Despite the great potential, the song still feels as if the track leads to a pathetic attempt to harmonize the somber sound of the lyrics in a clever but bittersweet way during the immense chorus. It's just too subtle - the track actually produced for everything from your car radio to the ultra mainstage doesn't have a decent time to jump up and throw your arms in the air (or whatever it's called what Garrix does during his concerts). There is no point, no climax, no iconic event. "

- Joe Carden : The Edge

Author Tim Tabend from the online magazine " Dance-Charts ", on the other hand, received the song very positively and praised the harmony of the song as well as the personal notes of Garrix:

“'Scared To Be Lonely' sounds very radio-friendly and can convince. The vocals are very soulful and fit perfectly. Small typical Martin Garrix skills can be heard. The main part adapts to the current melodic trap hype, but has an extremely high recognition value. [...] The number sounds breathtakingly good. Finest future pop. Especially the main part in the melodic trap style can more than convince. "

Music video

background

Work on the official music video started on January 16, 2017 in Edinburgh, Scotland . The shooting should have been completed within three days. Both Martin Garrix and Dua Lipa are part of the music video. It was written by Blake Claridge, who also directed. Craft London and Lois Newcombe were combined in the production. The music video was uploaded by Garrix on January 27, 2017, parallel to the release on his official YouTube channel. After just six hours, this counted around half a million views. Less than a week after publication, it cracked the 10 million views.

content

The music video builds on the lyrics. You can see the two musicians who represent the situation described in the lyrics. In some scenes they can be seen in different love acts, others in turn show the two protagonists alone, underneath Lipa is shown in front of a lighting wall singing the text of the song Playback. The key scene is formed by two hands, probably those of Garrix and Lipa, which first approach each other and then, after a brief touch, move away from each other again. The setting is a hut in a clearing.
